A Complimentary Windstar Destination Discovery Event
Tarragona: Giants, Big-Heads & Human Towers
During your Windstar Destination Discovery Event, you will visit the spectacular Roman amphitheater of Tarragona, built in the first or second century AD and now part of a UNESCO World Heritage Site. You’ll sip sangria and nosh on typical Catalan tapas including world-famous Iberian ham and will be entertained by some outlandish Catalan Giants and Big-Heads. The Giants have been a local tradition since the Middle Ages when they depicted fantastical creatures in Corpus Christi parades. The Giants are built on a hollow wooden framework and have heads made from papier-mâché. The carrier, called a “geganter” walks inside the framework and is concealed by the giant’s full length robes. The Giant will be accompanied by several Big-Heads – human-size creatures with enormous papier-mâché heads.
The most thrilling part of your evening’s entertainment will be the Castellers. A castell is a human tower built traditionally in festivals at many locations within Catalonia. At these festivals, several teams build and dismantle incredible towers of people. The tradition began near Tarragona and was first documented in 1712 and is now on the UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity List.
