Catania, Ancient Syracuse
The name of Siracusa suggests a warm climate, blue skies, a beautiful bay, and the ancient ruins of a Greek city which was the rival of Athens.   You will board your bus and head to Neapolis Archaeological Park which was created between 1952 and 1955 and contains many classical monuments. For security reasons you will only have access to the Greek Theatre and part of the Latomia del Paradiso, one of the ancient stone quarries; the other monuments can be viewed from a distance. This doesn’t detract in any way from the powerful fascination of this unique place. The Greek Theatre dated back to 5th century B.C. is one of the largest and best preserved theaters of the ancient world.  The Roman Amphitheater which is hewn out of the rocks, dates from 2nd century A.D., and the entrance and gangways for animals and gladiators can still be seen. You’ll proceed to Ortigia and walk about a half a mile to Old Town Ortigia.   You will visit Arethusa Fountain the legendary cradle of the city. From the nearby platform there is a view of the beautiful Bay of Siracusa, you will proceed to the Cathedral built in the 7th century on the foundation of the former Temple of Minerva, using the nine columns which can be seen on the north side.

Please note: This tour has a substantial amount of walking and is not recommended for people with limited mobility or walking issues and the bus does not have wheelchair accessibility.

Trapani, Trapani Walking Tour with Sicilian Coffee Break
Trapani is an attractive old port town, rediscovering its charms after years of neglect. Halfway between Europe and Tunis, it was a rich trading center throughout the early Middle Ages, then, flourished again in the 19th and early 20th centuries as a stronghold of the tuna-canning industry. After that, it went into decline, and became a salty old port. Then, it was selected to host the 2004 America’s Cup and received a massive injection of cash – buildings were restored, streets in the historic center pedestrianized – giving the town and its people a new confidence. These days Trapani is a thoroughly pleasant place to hang out for a couple of days. You will join your guide for a pleasant walking visit of the historical center of Trapani, with its many churches and palazzos with their ornate façades and elaborate interior, both perfect examples of the Baroque style. At the end of the guided visit, enjoy a typical Sicilian coffee break including one cannolo and one coffee, followed by 45 minute free time. At the conclusion of your tour you can leisurely walk back to the pier with your guide or continue to spend time in town returning to the ship on your own.

Please note: Wear comfortable walking shoes, a hat, and sunscreen. Proper attire that covers shoulders and knees is required for both men and women to enter religious venues. This tour is not suitable for those with walking difficulties because of the many stairs and slopes to climb.

The island of Vulcano is one of the most interesting in the Aeolian archipelago because of the exceptional nature and the variety of its landscapes. Your tour begins with a boat trip around the island where you’ll see breathtaking views of the Faraglioni, Grotta del Cavallo, and Vulcanello, arriving at the only landing spot, Porto di Levante. You have the option to stay at the beach for a mud bath or a bath in the clear water of the island, or to follow the guide for a hike up to the volcano. The climb up to the middle crater is particularly interesting and you can reach the top in less than an hour. The bathing and mud baths are available all year round, while hot springs heat the sea. In fact, off near the Faraglioni, you’ll see the boiling seawater phenomenon, caused by underwater fumaroles, jets of gas, bubbling up through the sea. The medicinal value of these thermal waters, together with the mud baths, is used in the treatment of various diseases and has made the island famous.

Please note:  The hike to the volcano is only recommended for fit people as a lot of uphill walking is involved. Wear walking shoes, bring a change of clothes and bottled water. Sorrento, Herculaneum
The city of Herculaneum, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, was founded around the 4th century B.C., copying the geometric regularity of the layout of Naples. Its “decumani” (main streets) have an east-west orientation, while the “cardines” (narrower streets) run north-south. There is undeniably a “feeling” about Herculaneum, quite different from Pompeii, where you get the impression that its ancient population of 5,000 packed up and left only moments ago. Herculaneum was smaller than Pompeii but is better preserved simply because, while hot ashes consumed the wood of Pompeii’s buildings, Herculaneum was covered by hot mud which sealed and protected entire city blocks. This means that marble floors, mosaics, paintings and carbonized woods can still be admired today. You will discover the ancient luxurious properties and villas including the House of the Mosaic, the House of Deer, the Thermae (baths) and the House of Carbonized Furniture. After a guided tour, you will be driven back to meet the yacht in Sorrento.

Re-board your boat and head to the enchanting village of Amalfi—its white houses perched on the rocks overlooking a bright blue bay. Flanked by an old Saracen tower and a 12th century Capuchin monastery, Amalfi boasts a splendid cathedral adorned with geometric designs in colored stones. Your guide will lead you to St. Andrew’s Cathedral and provide an introduction to the town before you’re set loose to explore on your own. Following this free time, return to your waiting yacht.

Amalfi, Ravello & Amalfi
You will set out from the harbor in Amalfi and enjoy a breathtaking panoramic 30-minute drive to Ravello—one of the most popular and well-known locations on the Amalfi Coast. You will see the duomo (cathedral) as you enter the main square. If the church is open, you will be able to peek inside at the majestic marble pulpit, richly cased with mosaic friezes and columns. You will visit Villa Rufolo with your guide, a spectacular complex formed by the main palace and various other buildings of Arabian-Sicilian style, arranged on a wide terrace facing the gulf. Walk along a small avenue till you’ll arrive at the Moorish courtyard, which opens up onto a luxurious garden of pines, cypress and exotic plants. From here, you can descend to the lower terrace. At the end of your visit, relax on the return drive to Amalfi, where you will visit the Cathedral and have free time to stroll along the narrow streets.
