Avignon and Le Baux
Upon reaching Avignon, set out on a scenic motor coach tour along the Rhone River, where you will learn about the area’s fascinating history, delivered in detail by your tour guide. While a marvelous city of art and culture, Avignon is most famous for being home to seven popes in the 14th century, who chose to reside here rather than in Rome. The incredible Palace of the Popes was constructed primarily during the papacies of Benedict XII and Clement VI and was one of the largest buildings of its time. You’ll visit this fascinating fortress-cum-residence, which consists of sumptuously decorated chambers, chapels and passages. Afterward, your guide will lead you on a walking tour through the enchanting old town, and then your drive takes you into the Alpilles Range to the amazing hilltop village of Les Baux. It sits atop a rocky mountain spur like an eagle’s nest, perched 800 feet above the valley floor.

A lovely drive into the Provencal countryside brings you to the charming old town of Aix-en-Provence. The avenue is lined with wrought-iron balconies and finely carved doorways. Explore the old Mazarin District, founded by Archbishop Michel Mazarin in 1646 and later home to many writers and artists such as Paul Cézanne. The district is also noted for its meticulously kept walled gardens. You will discover beautiful St. Sauveur Cathedral with its many contrasting architectural styles, a legacy of countless additions and renovations performed between the 5th and 18th centuries. Marseille Highlights
From the pier depart by motorcoach for an exploration of Marseilles - France's second city and home of the Mediterranean's largest port. Begin in the "le vieux port," the Old Port, where the Greeks landed in 600 BC. Here classically French cafes and restaurants nestle about gently bobbing fishing boats in the harbor. Continue along the J.F. Kennedy Corniche following the coast that offers lovely views of offshore islands and surrounding mountains. The first stop is Notre Dame de la Garde Basilica, located at the highest point of the city at just over 500 feet. Built on an ancient fortress from the 16th century, the sanctuary was dedicated to the Virgin, and consecrated in 1864. The 120-step climb to the interior is well worth the effort - those less inclined are also rewarded as the esplanade offers an impressive view over Marseille. From the Basilica descend into the city's shopping district and the Longchamp Palace. This municipal water tower, designed by the architect Esperandieu and completed in 1869, houses the Museums of Fine Art and Natural History, and its facade is strangely reminiscent of the Palais de Chaillot in Paris, although it predates it by 68 years. Departure for the Canebière, from this mythical street you will be able to see the shopping streets called rue Paradis, rue de Rome and rue St Ferréol. Stop at the Old Port "Vieux Port" where you will have some free time at leisure around the harbor before driving back to your ship.

Figueres and Dali Museum
Begin your excursion with a scenic drive to Figueras, located in the northern part of the Empordà region, a sweeping fertile plain that lies inland from the Gulf of Roses. Enjoy the sights of small towns on the way to the highlight of your day, the Dali Theatre-Museum.
Prepare yourself for an extraordinary experience while visiting the museum, which houses the works of one of the art world's geniuses of the 20th century, Salvador Dali. Built by Dali himself around the former Municipal Theater, the museum is where most of the artist's works can be seen, and where his first exhibition was held. Dali was also buried at this site alongside the church that was also the scene of his christening and funeral, the first and last acts of a perfectly planned scenario.
Upon entering the museum, take in the huge collection that encompasses his most outstanding works. Highlights include Rainy Taxi, Sala Mae West, which is a scenography of a living room, which turns into the face of the legendary actress through optical illusion, and the enormous portrait of Abraham Lincoln. Also see the crypt where Dali is buried.
Upon departing the museum, enjoy some free time in town, time permitting, to browse the shops in Figueras before reboarding your coach for the return drive to Palamos.

In the 1960s, the castle of Peratallada was restored to its medieval splendor by its present owners, who welcome you to experience the medieval enclosure. Declared a historic-artistic monument, most of the buildings are built from stone carved from the fosse or moat which still encircles parts of this small fortified medieval town. The privately-owned Castle of Peratallada is the dominant structure in the center of the town, with a 13th century Romanesque church dedicated to Sant Esteve outside the town walls. The castle has been documented as early as 1065 AD and it was restored as a luxury hotel in the 1960s.
