A Complimentary Windstar Destination Discovery Event
Fort George: Beating Retreat
Fort George is positioned on a nearby promontory, jutting into the Moray Firth. Completed in 1769, Fort George is a Registered Historic Monument and is the only ancient monument in Scotland which is still functioning as a working army barracks.
After 250 years as a military garrison and training depot, Fort George continues to house a Regular Infantry Battalion of the British Army, currently the 3rd Battalion the Royal Regiment of Scotland (3SCOTS). Here you will be able to have a look around the Museum of `The Highlanders` which tells the story of the many Highlanders who served in one of the Regiments that were raised from the Region. Then make your way to an exclusive marquee erected for your party where canapés and drinks will be served before a `Beating Retreat` which will add an unforgettable splash of color, spectacle and sound to your event with the swirl of the kilt, and the skirl of the bagpipes.
Although the "Beating Retreat" is purely a ceremonial occasion these days, its origins are founded in the military routine of the past. In the 16th century the drum was a means of battlefield communication.
After this spectacular show of pipes and drums, you will then depart by coach back to the pier, remembering the stirring spectacle of this Destination Discovery Event.
Please note: This Destination Discovery Event has been scheduled in a way that will allow you to book and experience another shore excursion on the same day and you will not miss anything.
