Our Storyteller: Gus Puga
Onboard Cruise Consultant
Gus Puga grew up in Santiago, Chile, where his father practiced law and his mother taught art. “I got the best of both of them,” he boasts. Gus went on to study art history in New York, then returned to Santiago for law school. Right before the bar, he decided to take a break and travel. “That was 15 years ago, and I’m still traveling!” He’s been working in the cruise industry since 2005, first helping guests collect art and then assisting them with future cruises – a natural move, given that he’s explored every corner of the world, including the North Pole and Antarctica (twice). “I’ve done two world cruises, touched every continent, and visited everywhere from Alaska to Australia,” Gus says. We’re happy to have him onboard.
Gus Puga feels it’s a privilege to sail on this Holy Lands itinerary, visiting ancient shores of “incalculable cultural value.” This region of the eastern Mediterranean is “the very cradle of civilization,” says the Windstar cruise consultant, “sparking an exhilarating sense of adventure.” Gus recalls riding a camel outside Cairo to one of Giza’s iconic pyramids, then venturing through a dark, narrow tunnel to its inner chamber. “That moment evoked all my childhood fantasies,” he enthuses. “I was living an Indiana Jones movie!” Three full days in Israel offer the chance to explore Jerusalem, which also made a huge impact on the consultant. “It’s hard to describe the city’s exceptional energy, which transcends all cultures and religions,” he says, “a walk along the Via Dolorosa, which traces Jesus’ last steps, gave him “a real perspective of the passion of Christ.” Add numerous UNESCO World Heritage Sites — from Cyprus’s Neolithic dwellings at Khirokitia to the stunning Baha’i Gardens in Haifa – and Gus assures guests the trip of a lifetime, further enhanced by the newly transformed Star Legend: “There are great new features and extra space to make you feel right at home.”
  • Take advantage of an overnight in Haifa to join Windstar’s immersive, 3-day overland expedition to Jerusalem, Masada, the Dead Sea, and magnificent Petra in Jordan, reuniting with Star Legend in Ashdod: “It’s quite simply the most comprehensive Holy Land experience possible.”
  • Explore Cairo on an overnight from Port Said – “You stay at the historic Mena House Hotel, which enjoys views of the Pyramids.”
  • Tour the Catacombs of Kom El Shoqafa in Alexandria, the largest Roman burial site in Egypt: “They’re absolutely fascinating.”
  • Stroll around Heraklion’s Old Town with its fortification walls, medieval architecture, leafy squares, and hundreds of shops and cafés. Prefer to relax? “Spend the day at the beach, just a few blocks from the ship.”
