Newport, Beneath the Breakers
The 70-room summer estate of Cornelius Vanderbilt II, president of the New York Central Railroad, was built in 1895. Architect Richard Morris Hunt modeled the 4-story residence after 16th century Italian Renaissance palaces. You will discover this gracious and immense cottage of the Vanderbilt family on this unique outing offering a new perspective.  From the pier depart along America’s Cup Avenue and then Bellevue Avenue to The Breakers, the largest and best known of the summer cottages remaining from the gilded-age.  Upon arrival, begin in the caretaker’s cottage with a short video on the engineering of the manor before heading to see the massive boilers that powered all floors.  Take the 360-foot long tunnel that connected the boiler rooms to the basement of the house.  Here you will get an up-close look at the cutting-edge construction techniques, electrical and plumbing systems of more than a century ago, and their modern counterparts.  The home was the pinnacle of the available technology when constructed.  From the basement, head upstairs to the entry of the mansion.  You will collect your audio headset and begin your narrated exploration.  Be sure to look for the sculpted figures tucked above the pillars. The interior includes rare marble, alabaster, and gilded rooms with open-air terraces revealing magnificent ocean views. Noteworthy are a blue marble fireplace, rose alabaster pillars in the dining room, and a porch with a mosaic ceiling that took Italian artisans six months on their backs to install. Your tour will conclude in the extensive shop where time is afforded to browse before meeting your guide for the return to the pier.

Newport, Colonial Walk
Newport is one of America's oldest cities and has the distinction of retaining more original colonial-period buildings than any other.  You will meet your guide and stroll through the heart of Newport's National Registered Historic Landmarks District and hear the story of how this long-neglected neighborhood became a model for historic preservation. With the help of tobacco heiress Doris Duke, who personally financed much of the restoration, the historic district is now home to more than 80 fully restored colonial homes.  Along the way, you will pass architect Peter Harrison’s Brick Market Museum, the Old Colony House, the White Horse Tavern, and the Quaker Meeting House.  Watch for the Touro Synagogue -- the oldest synagogue in the country and one of the many sites visited by Presidents George Washington and Thomas Jefferson.  You will return to the quay via the square where Hollywood producer-director Stephen Spielberg filmed Amistad in 1997, among the city's most picturesque landmarks.
