You will start with a panoramic drive of the city of Cádiz where the guide will point out the most important monuments and attractions of the city.  You will then proceed to the beautiful village of Vejer de la Frontera. Vejer is one of the most picturesque spots in the south of Spain.  It was declared Historic and Artistic Collection in 1976. Its walled enclosure features four gates (The arches of La Segur, Sancho IV, La Villa and Puerta Cerrada) and two towers ( Mayorazgo and La Corredera or Castrillone). Outside the primitive walled enclosure lies the Plaza de España, built in the 16^th century, which, initially, held the bullfighting events organized by the nobles and knights of Vejer. For religious architecture, have a look at the Church of the Divine Saviour, constructed on the remains of a previous mosque, whose minaret is yet preserved. The styles go from the Mudejar and Gothic of the headboard, to Renaissance and Barroque. Some free time will be given to check the souvenirs shops or sit in any bar or cafe. Boarding the bus again, you will take the scenic “Atlantic Route," with its stunning countryside, passing by the Natural Park La Breña, a proctected pine tree forest with cliffs of up to 328 feet (100 meters). From the bus  you will see Trafalgar Cape with its lighthouse, that marks the place where the Trafalgar Battle took place in 1805, when the France-Spaniard troops fought against the English.

Cadiz, Highlights on Foot

Cádiz is the Iberian Peninsula’s oldest continuously inhabited city and lies on a narrow spit of land, surrounded by the Mediterranean Sea.  Your guided stroll begins at Plaza de España, near the port. In common with most other Cádiz squares, the nearby Plaza de la Mina was formerly a large vegetable garden belonging to the San Francisco Convent.  You will pass the Museum, and stroll on to Calle Ancha (Wide Street), where you will see several handsome 19th century palaces. Nearby, San Juan de Dios Square is protected by seawalls and features a unique marble fountain. But perhaps the Town Hall is the building that best reflects the grace and style of the city. After a 40-minute visit to the interior of the impressive Cádiz Cathedral, you will walk back to the ship.

Gibraltar, Exclusive Mayor’s Parlour & Hidden Gems of Gibraltar

From the quayside travel north across Gibraltar's unique runway to the border between this small colony and Spain. View this remarkable border and the Spanish mainland beyond. Proceed along the outskirts of town, passing the American War Memorial and The Trafalgar Cemetery to arrive at Europa Point. From this vantage point you can admire views of the coast of North Africa, 12 miles across the famous Straits of Gibraltar. You will appreciate why this territory was and continues to be of such strategic importance to the British Navy. Your tour will then take you on to Rooke’s Battery, a now derelict artillery battery on the west side of the Rock of Gibraltar. The Battery has a plaque labelled ‘1906’ and is named after Sir George Rooke who commanded the British Fleet when Gibraltar came under British Rule. Move on to the nearby Windsor Suspension Bridge. One of Gibraltar’s newest tourist attractions, it is not for the faint hearted. This spectacular feat of engineering is 233 feet (71 meters) in length, across a 164-foot (50-meter)-deep gorge, affording magnificent views across the bay and city of Gibraltar. The Rock’s Apes spring to mind at the mention of the Rock of Gibraltar and here is where your next stop will take you. You will take a short walk down to King Charles V Wall, better known as ‘Ape’s Den’ which seems to be a usual habitat of the apes, which are indeed a breed of tailless monkeys (Macaca Sylvanus), that roam free on the rocky slopes. They are endearing creatures with a penchant for handbags to say nothing of cameras and hats. Reboard your bus, which will take you on a short drive to Princess Caroline’s Battery, a former artillery battery located at the northern end of the Gibraltar Nature Reserve. It was constructed in 1732 and named after the third daughter of King George II.
You will be transferred to the City Hall, to visit the Mayor’s Parlour and enjoy some cold canapes and beverages. You will then be given some time to roam the building in its entirety including the National Art Gallery. Have your cameras ready as you are allowed to take photos of all the works of art which are on display. Who knows, if you are lucky, you might even run into His Worship the Mayor of Gibraltar and get a chance to have a chat with him and even take a photo with him. You will once again board your motorcoach and be transferred back to the yacht.

Malaga, Cordoba & Its Famous Mosque

Embark on a scenic 1-hour and 45-minute drive  to Cordoba to one of the most famous and impressive sites in Spain, also a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Ten centuries ago, Cordoba was one of the greatest cities in the world, with a population approaching one million. The Capital of Muslim Spain and the center of the Caliph’s power, Cordoba was Europe’s largest city as well as a cultural and intellectual sear. Cordoba’s hour of greatest glory was when it became the capital of the Moorish kingdom of ‘El-Andalus’.  You will visit the Great Mosque, or ‘Mezquita’, which – after several centuries of additions and enlargements became one of the largest in all of Islam. Take a magical walk through the forest of columns, passing beneath its arches and breathing in the history of Arab Cordoba, so brusquely and surprisingly interrupted by the Christian Cathedral set in the center of its vast interior.  Continue to the Jewish Quarter and stroll through the quaint, ancient, winding, cobblestone and flower-filled streets. Just a few yards away from the small square Tiberiades – where the monument to the philosopher Maimonides stands – lies one of three surviving pre-inquisition synagogues in Spain. A Mudejar construction dating from 1315, the interior includes a gallery for women looking on to the sanctuary through small balconies, and  plasterwork of Hebrew inscriptions. You will have 90 minutes of free time to take the oportunity to taste the local tapas in one of the bars in the area or sightsee before another scenic ride returning to the yacht.

Malaga, Torcal de Malaga Hiking

Located approximately 19 miles (30 km) north of Malaga in the direction of Antequera, El Torcal Natural Reserve is home to some of the most beautiful and impressive karstic limestone landscapes in Europe. One hundred million years ago, the whole area was below sea level. Then, the Earth crust's violent movements forced the land upward into hills and mountains. The limestone still kept its layered horizontal formation. Beacuse of this, over the course of time, the rain and the wind have been able to chisel away at these layers to form incredible shapes.  You will board your motor coach for a 1.5-hour drive to El Torcal Natural Reserve. Then, you will visit the center of El Torcal and learn about its history by watching a 15-minute documentary. At this point, the trekking journey starts. It will take you over interesting valleys, linking up ascents and descents through a fascinating sector labyrinth. Once the route has finished, you will have time to taste Spanish tapas (tortilla and parma ham) and enjoy the viewpoint of Las Ventanillas that you will find next to the parking lot. From this viewpoint, you can see the Costa del Sol on a clear day.

Almeria, Kayaking in Almeria

Board your waiting motor coach for the 45-minute drive to the town of San Jose  were you will be issued a kayak and take part in a 90-minute journey on crystal clear waters through several coves, Posidonia’s sea bed and other wonders of the marine reserve around Almeria. Enjoy the peaceful kayaking on this route that will allow you to see wonderful landscapes from the sea, while learning something about nature and the environment.
 
Please note: To go on this journey you must be able to swim. Children under 8 and pregnant women may not participate. All minors must be accompanied by an adult. This tour is suggested for people in good physical condition. In order to avoid the effects of sun and wind, Bring a sun hat, sun protection, a t-shirt and swimsuit. Almeria, Almeria City Tour

Ancient civilizations have come and gone in the city of Almeria, once an Arab stronghold. Your tour of the city will be on foot, as motor coaches are not permitted in the Old Town.  You will begin your tour on the Paseo de Almeria, the most central street of the city.  Visit the Alcazaba Palace of the Moorish Kings, which houses collections of Phoenician, Roman, and Moorish artifacts.  Your next stop will be at the Cathedral, a lovely Gothic building with Renaissance facades, constructed with an incompatible dual purpose – a place of worship and a bastion of defense against Berber pirates. Other points of interest you will see along your walk are the 17^th century Convent of Las Puras, the Episcopal Palace, the Cervantes Theater, and the Mercantile Center.

Cartagena, Journey to Murcia

You are invited to enjoy a superb sightseeing tour in the charming province of Murcia. Departing from Cartagena by motor coach you will journey for one hour through the foothills of the Sierra de Carrascoy. Your destination is the capital of the province – Murcia. Settled by the Moors in the 9th century and conquered by the Christians in the 13th century, this bustling city offers a wonderful array of architectural delights. Your first stop will be the Monastery of the Virgin of Fuensanta (the Patroness of Murcia). Enjoy a panoramic view of the Murcian orchards, producers of the most fruits and vegetables in all of the Mediterranean. Then travel on for an external visit at the Murcia Cathedral, a medley of Gothic, Baroque and Renaissance architecture. The old building of the Casino of Murcia is your next stop before heading back to your ship.

Please note: There are 3 steps to get in the Casino and 3 more in each room inside with tiles on the floor.  There is a ramp in the monastery and most of the walking is on flat surfaces.  Comfortable walking shoes are recommended. 

             

Cartagena Highlights and the Roman Theatre

Discover a cultural legacy spanning more than 3,000 years as you explore the sights of Cartagena accompanied by an experienced guide. Visit the impressive Roman Theatre and its Museum, whose discovery and excavation provided valuable archaeological insight into the important role of Cartagena in Old Spain’s (Hispania Antigua) history. Your next stop is the Maritime Wall, from where you will see magnificent harbor views as you stroll toward Town Hall Square and the city’s main avenue. Your walking tour will show you the impressive late 19th century modernist architecture. Before returning to the yacht, you will take a 30-minute visit to the archaeological site of Muralla Punica and discover the surviving remnants of the old Punic Wall that once protected the city during the Cartagines’ occupation. A short 15-minute drive will return you to the yacht.

This excursion takes place in Palma, capital and largest city of the island of Mallorca. This is your opportunity to discover Palma in a different way – with Segway – a funny, enjoyable and eco-friendly electric transportation dotted with an intelligent network of sensors that allows the machine to keep its balance and move along on 2 wheels. It works with a simple pair of lithium batteries that are rechargeable or simply, plug in at the current. So, a clever and alternative way that allows you to go further, avoiding petrol expenses, parking issues and collaborates with the preservation of the environment. There are various routes possible to be taken in this interesting city such as the Palma Old Quarter Route. This fascinating tour will have stops along  the  way such as Xesc Forteza Theatre, San Francisco Church, Monti-Sion Church, Major Square, Cort Square and the Town Hall, la Lonja with its bars and restaurants as well as many 13th century courtyards, one of the emblematic elements characteristic of the city.
 
Please note: Not recommended for people who have difficulty walking or climbing or who are wheelchair confined. Maximum weight to operate a Segway – 220 pounds. If there is a “things to do” in Palma de Mallorca is would be confirming that the facade of the 13^th  century Gothic Cathedral is reflected on the sea. In fact, the building dominates the Roman walls and was constructed on the top of the former Medina Mayurga Synagogue after James I recovered the Island for the Kingdom of Aragon. Take advantage and discover  the unique pieces kept in the Cathedral Museum and why the city of Jerusalem is so interested in one of them. After finding out the secrets, stroll with your guide around the old part of the city and discover some of the over 200 hidden courtyards of the noble houses of Palma. Majorcan people have been able to conserve part of each patrimony left by the different cultures who have inhabited the island.  Enjoy a drink and an aperitif at the gardens of the remains of the 11^th century Arab baths before walking back to the bus to return to the yacht.

Barcelona Montserrat with Transfer to Airport

Your tour departs from the port for the 1-hour drive to reach Montserrat, a peculiar rocky mountain range which is the site of the monastery where people come to worship “La Moreneta,” the black Madonna who is the patron-virgin of Catalonia.  The Benedictine Monastery of Montserrat was founded in the 11th century and is located in a natural park 37 miles west of Barcelona. Besides visiting the Benedictine Abbey Monastery, you will admire also the Patron of Catalonia, Saint Mary of Montserrat that is worshiped at the shrine in the Monastery. The Benedictine community, now numbering some 80 monks, has served the shrine for almost 1,000 years. They are dedicated to a life of prayer, to working and to welcoming pilgrims, making the site a place for dialogue, prayer and culture. In addition to the monks, the escolans also live in Montserrat. They form the oldest boys choir in Europe ( and might be available during the visit). You will be given a tour of the monastery, and have some free time before taking the coach to the airport.

 

Please note:  Comfortable shoes, water, a light jacket and a hat are recommended. There are downhill and uneven paths, plus cobblestones to walk over. There may be long lines to view the Black Virgin up close.  This excursion may operate in reverse. Access to the Basilica might be denied if mass is taking place. Shoulders and knees must be covered to enter monastery.  This tour will end at the airport and is available only to guests whose flights leave at 3:00 p.m. or later.

Antibes was founded by Greek merchants in the 5th century and is one of France’s oldest cities. From Cannes you will take a 45-minute drive along the coast en route to this historic destination. On arrival, your walking exploration begins in the city’s old quarter, with its maze of small, flower-bedecked streets featuring both Roman and Medieval sections. Imposing 16th century ramparts overlook the Mediterranean, nurturing the heart of the Old Town. After time for independent exploration, you will enter a shop set inside a 9th century vaulted cellar incorporating a Roman well. Here you will be invited to taste regional delicacies including tapenade, accompanied by a glass of the famous “absinthe,” a wormwood-based alcoholic beverage that was the favorite of many 19th century French artists. There will be time to browse among the olive oil and other local delicacies available for sale before rejoining your coach for the return to Cannes.

Cannes, St Paul De Vence

Depart the port of Cannes for the 1-hour scenic journey to St.Paul de Vence. The scenery changes drastically from coastal to rural while approaching the hilltop village of St Paul de Vence which was founded in 9th century. By the 16th century, the beleaguered village was fortified by ramparts, which still stand today. St. Paul De Vence has also retained its medieval charm, one of its primary draws. This heaven for artists boasts a number of fine museums such as La Fondation Maeght, which features contemporary works from Braque and Giacometti, among others. The local artisans are highly regarded for their weaving, woodwork and jewelry pieces, which are on display in the many galleries. After your guided walk you will have free time at your disposal to discover on your own, or visit an art gallery or shop or simply relax in one of the cafés and mingle with the locals.

After a 20-minute cruise, your first stop will be in the little bay of San Fruttuoso Village, the ancient residence of the Doria family. Its splendid natural surroundings are enhanced by the architectural beauty of its church and 10th century abbey. The imposing cliffs encircling the inlet, a small beach and lush Mediterranean vegetation, combined with the almost unreal absence of vehicles, creates a truly unique and enjoyable ambiance. Pause to savor the enchanting views as your boat remains in the bay for 10 minutes. Heading further up the coast you will reach Camogli, a typical small fishing village that was formerly the site of bustling shipyards that helped build one of the world’s greatest merchant fleets. Camogli’s original medieval setting was centered around a local parish church constructed on an island that was once completely detached from the mainland. Today, it is connected to the mainland by a square surrounded by colorful buildings including one of the Italian coast’s most beautiful Baroque churches. During your 1½-hour stay, there will be time for a guided tour followed by free time. Back aboard your boat, enjoy the 45-minute return cruise to Portofino.

Combine a visit to the enchanting village of Porto Azzuro with wine tasting at a vineyard once frequented by Emperor Napoleon. After leaving the busy capital of Portoferraio, your 30-minute drive will feature magnificent views of Lacona and Laconella Bays as well as Golfo Stella as you pass rocky beaches and high cliffs. Ahead lies Porto Azzuro, which boasts an ancient medieval fortress and picturesque fisherman’s harbor. You will have free time to browse among its many tempting shops. Back aboard the coach you will continue to the Azienda Agricola La Chiusa estate, whose vineyard directly overlooks Portoferraio. This estate hosted Napoleon Bonaparte on two separate occasions. As the vineyard prides itself on quality over quantity, its vines are always pruned very short. This tour is perfect for those who would like to visit Rome but do not feel like walking the cobblestone streets. You will meet the local guide at disembarkation  and board a coach for Rome to start the tour with  Via Veneto, which became popular in the 1960s as the heart of the “Dolce Vita” of Fellini’s Cinema, Castel Sant’ Angelo and St. Peter’s Basilica and Square, the monumental square surrounded by four sets of 284 columns on 88 pillars. It is the masterwork of Bernini and welcomes pilgrims  to the largest temple in Christianity. The dome was designed by Michelangelo.  Your tour will continue to the Ostiense Gate,right next to the amazing Pyramid of Caio Cestio, built in 12 B.C., and the Baths of Caracalla, the second largest spa in ancient Rome.  Then you will head to the Circus Maximus, which could welcome 320,000 spectators who watched chariot races there. Pass by the Colosseum, constructed in only 8 years, where over 70,000 spectators could take a seat and leave the building in only a few minutes through its 80 entries. Your tour also includes The dome of the basilica was designed by Michelangelo. Your drive will continue to St. Paul’s Basilica Outside the Walls, where you will have free time to explore on your own. The coach will wait for you in the vicinity to return you to the Windstar Cruises hotel.

 

Please note: There are 3-4 steps to enter and exit the coach and a few steps in St. Paul’s Basilica. If you are not staying at the Windstar hotel you will be dropped of at the Piazza Repubblica where many taxis are available to take you to your independent hotel.

Please note: This tour will terminate at your Windstar Cruises hotel or the airport. If you are not staying at the Windstar hotel you will be dropped of after the tour at the Piaza Repubblica, centrally located with many taxis available to take you to your independent hotel. There is a strict dress code at the Museum and the Basilica. Women can wear trousers, capri pants and skirts and dresses are permitted, however they cannot be shorter than knee length and shoulders must be covered.  In very hot weather a shawl or large scarf/Pashmina can be draped around the shoulders for visiting the sites.  Bare shoulders, shorts, and short skirts are not permitted.  Men can wear long pants and at least short sleeves. No shorts, t-shirts without sleeves or baseball caps inside the churches. Large bags, backpacks and metal or pointed items are not allowed.  The order of sites visited may be adjusted anytime and without prior notice for security reasons. The Sistine Chapel and St. Peter's Basilica may close without prior notice. Should this happen we will provide free time instead.
