Emperor Napoleon was exiled on the island of Elba for 300 days beginning in May 1814. Take a look at that fascinating bygone era on this tour that will include one of his two island residences. You will visit his country residence (Villa San Martino). Visiting the Villa San Martino country home you will see the Room of the Doves, whose ceiling is adorned with a painting depicting two doves linked by a knotted ribbon that tightens as they fly further away. By way of contrast, the Egyptian Room has a circular ceiling painting featuring a ring of Zodiac signs.  You will stop at the picturesque Port Azzuro, one of the most pleasant seaside areas you’ll ever see.  You will have free time in Port Azzuro perhaps enjoying an espresso, a gelato or strolling the pedestrian paths or the harbor.  

 

Please note: At Villa San Martino there is an uphill walk of 900 feet along a smooth surface to reach this villa. Comfortable walking shoes are recommended. As temperatures can be high, guests are advised to bring along a hat and bottled water. Layered clothing is suggested due to unpredictable rainstorms.

           

 

 

 

 

Your guide will be pleased to meet you on the pier to start your tour by private car or minivan heading to the charming village of San Rocco by a panoramic road. San Rocco is a small hamlet, settled on the top of Portofino’s National Natural Park ( Site of Community Importance) , and is the starting point of a lovely path. The walk follows the coast line and stops in front of the little church of San Nicolò Capodimonte for a short visit. Proceed then to Punta Chiappa, a rocky formation jutting out into the sea, which is also a very interesting area due to a breathtaking landscapeand this site can be reached only by path or boat, no roads, no vehicles! All around there is  the coastline of Liguria, ahead Corsica, and behind on land there is the Batteria di Punta Chiappa hidden in the mountains. You will arrive at Stella Maris Resort and have the choice to swim (please note: no beaches and no sand, only rocks and water shoes recommended) or snorkel (no guide or equipment included, guest should take mask and fins on their own) or just relax on the terrace of Stella Maris Resort. You will then be welcomed with an aperitif on the terrace accompanied  by local specialties, and enjoy lunch including a starter and special homemade pasta with Camogli pesto sauce. After lunch, you will sail to  Camogli by boat to enjoy a guided walking tour among the highlights of this lovely fishing village.

Cinque Terre, a UNESCO World Heritage Site is also a National Park and Protected Marine Area.  Clinging to the Ligurian cliffs on the west coast of Italy are five castles at nearly the same distance from one another - Monterosso, Vernazza, Corniglia, Manarola, and Riomaggiore. Today you will see two of these sites as the ancient mariners had - from the sea. Depart from the pier heading to Cinque Terre, or five lands, and marvel as you approach the beautiful coast with villages suspended above the sea, almost defying gravity. Pass the scenic Tigullio Gulf and Poet's Gulf, with terraced vineyards alive with the aroma of olive trees blended with the fresh ocean breeze.  Arrive at the village of Vernazza, where you will disembark the vessel and begin a guided walking tour of this 1st century village. Notice the richness of its architecture, which evinces a wealthier standard of living than that of other villages. Following your tour, you will have free time to browse the local shops or enjoy a cafe. Reboard your boat and proceed to the next stop, the most westerly village and Cinque Terre's beach town, Monterosso. The town is divided into two distinct parts, San Cristoforo Hill, and the old maritime village protected by a rock spur. After your guide points out the highlights of Monterosso, you will have some free time to explore on your own, enjoy the beach and purchase your lunch. Meet the guide after free time and enjoy a relaxing panoramic cruise back to Santa Margherita.

Continue walking on to Santa Anna and Nozarego and finally you will arrive at the main promenade of Santa Margherita Ligure. Santa Margherita’s colors, the arrangement of its characteristic houses, its rich villas and great hotels have painted around its bay something similar to a magical reflection. Pause for refreshment at a café and then you will return to Portofino by minivan, or you may choose to remain in Santa Margherita to stroll around on your own and go back to Portofino by taxi, public ferry or public bus.

Your motor coach will take you to Monaco Rock where elevators and escalators transport you up to the Old City. Take a guided walking tour up the hill and through the narrow streets, past the Oceanographic Museum, and the Cathedral containing the tomb of Princess Grace and Prince Rainier. Visit the interior of the Prince's Palace followed by some free time to explore further on your own. Next, you will descend from the rock and drive on a small part of the Grand Prix circuit on your way to Casino Square. Your final stop is Monte Carlo, where you will first walk along the Formula 1® circuit up to Casino Square to discover the most prominent and famous building on this square - the Grand Casino, surrounded by the Hotel de Paris and the Café de Paris. You may want to stroll around the square admiring the designer boutiques, or try your luck with the slot machines at the Café de Paris Casino. Return to the pier or if you want to stay to explore more on your own, return to the ship at your leisure.

 

Please note:  This excursion involves walking over cobblestone streets and uneven surfaces, so comfortable walking shoes are recommended. The walk to Casino Square is 15 minutes of steep uphill walking so not recommended for those with mobility issues. The order of sites visited may vary. The Grand Casino opens for visits only from 9 a.m. to noon. Gambling is allowed in the afternoon from 2 p.m. The entrance fee is not included (17 euros) and a passport is required for guests who wish to visit the Casino on their own in the afternoon. Shorts, short skirts, and bare shoulders are not considered acceptable attire for visiting the Casino and Cathedral.  The Prince’s Palace is closed during the winter season usually from mid-October to April. You will depart from Monaco for a scenic 60-minute drive to Nice, considered the Pearl of the French Riviera. You will disembark your motor coach for a guided walk and tour of Nice’s Old Town, known as the Cours Saleya, where you will see a fabulous flower, fruit and vegetable local market. Explore the surrounding area with its colorful houses, narrow picturesque streets and squares with their Italian flair.  You will  have free time to stroll in the charming little streets and to shop before re-boarding your motor coach for the return trip to Monaco.

Begin this excursion with a scenic drive to Le Castellet - a typical Provençal hilltop village above the vineyards. This remarkable stronghold boasts well-preserved ramparts, a carefully restored 12th century church, and a castle dating back to the 11th century. Entering by the two fortified gates, called le portail and le portalet, you will start your visit with a guided walking tour around the narrow streets up to the castle which is now home to the town hall. The avenue is one of the city's most beautiful, so be sure to notice the elegant facades of its private mansions, especially their wrought-iron balconies and finely carved doorways.  Explore the old Mazarin District, founded by archbishop Michel Mazarin in 1646, and later home to many writers and artists such as Paul Cézanne. The district is also noted for its meticulously kept walled gardens. During this tour, you'll see a great diversity of scenary such as rough coves on the coasts, forests, fields and medieval villages … and without much effort!  You will leave the port with the e-bikes, and head towards la Fosca, a pretty little beach with beautiful views. Continue the route cycling along the greenway called "Ruta del Tren Petit,” which used to be a narrow-gauge railway line. Head north, where you'll cycle along agricultural roads. As a backdrop, appreciate les Gavarres, a mass of of hilly woodlands that is important for the production of cork. Cycle through the plain of the Empordà and finally arrive at the medieval village of Pals. Its old center is dominated by a Roman Tower built between the 11th  and 13th  centuries.  You will find pebbled streets, half-point arches, facádes with ogive windows and stone balconies. The city wall has four square towers from the 4th  century. From Pals you'll have great views to the rice fields of the Ter River plain and the Medes Islands in the sea. Begin your excursion with a scenic drive to Figueras, located in the northern part of the Empordà region, a sweeping fertile plain that lies inland from the Gulf of Roses. Enjoy the sights of small towns on the way to the highlight of your day, the Dalí Theatre-Museum. Prepare yourself for an extraordinary experience while visiting the museum, which houses the works of one of the art world’s geniuses of the 20th century, Salvador Dalí. Built by Dalí himself around the former Municipal Theater, the museum is where most of the artist’s works can be seen, and where his first exhibition was held. Dalí was also buried at this site alongside the church that was also the scene of his christening and funeral. Upon entering the museum, you will take in the huge collection that encompasses his most outstanding works. Highlights include Rainy Taxi, Sala Mae West, a scenography of a living room, which turns into the face of the legendary actress through optical illusion, and the enormous portrait of Abraham Lincoln. Also see the crypt where Dalí is buried. Upon departing the museum, enjoy some free time in town, to browse the shops in Figueras before reboarding your coach for the return drive to Palamos.

Your tour departs from the port for the 1-hour drive to reach Montserrat, a peculiar rocky mountain range which is the site of the monastery where people come to worship “La Moreneta,” the black Madonna who is the patron-virgin of Catalonia.  The Benedictine Monastery of Montserrat was founded in the 11th century and is located in a natural park 37 miles west of Barcelona. Besides visiting the Benedictine Abbey Monastery, you will admire also the Patron of Catalonia, Saint Mary of Montserrat that is worshiped at the shrine in the Monastery. The Benedictine community, now numbering some 80 monks, has served the shrine for almost 1,000 years. They are dedicated to a life of prayer, to working and to welcoming pilgrims, making the site a place for dialogue, prayer and culture. In addition to the monks, the escolans also live in Montserrat. They form the oldest boys choir in Europe ( and might be available during the visit).  You will be given a tour of the monastery, and have some free time before taking the coach back to the Windstar hotel.

There may be long lines to view the Black Virgin up close.  This excursion may operate in reverse. Access to the Basilica might be denied if mass is taking place. Setting out from the port by coach, you will find it easy to relax and enjoy this driving tour of Spain’s most fascinating city, Barcelona, a lovely Mediterranean stronghold of architectural interest. You will drive along one of Barcelona’s most famous streets, the Passeig de Gracia, lined with different Modernist buildings, many of which were designed by architect Antoni Gaudí. Watch for Casa Batlló, an iconic Barcelona landmark and Casa Mila. You will drive by one of Gaudí’s masterpieces – the Sagrada Familia (Holy Family) Church (outside visit). This is a site not to be missed. Though construction was started in 1882 it is still unfinished. This UNESCO World Heritage Site is the most-visited building in Barcelona, and immediately identifies the city around the world. From here you’ll head up to the viewpoint in Montjuic with the most exceptional views of Barcelona and its impressive harbor.

Your tour will depart for the 75-minute drive to the town of Porto Cristo, one of the oldest anchorages of the island. This fishing village is located at the end of a sheltered bay which developed in the Middle Ages to cater for Manacor. On the outskirts of the town is where you will find the famous Caves del Drach are located. The Caves of Drach are the most popular caves with tourists. There are three main caves, Cueva Negra (Black Cave), Cueva Blanca (White Cave) and Cueva Luis Salvator, at the end of which is a place called La Ventana (the window). Through La Ventana there is a huge lake, now known as Lago Martel (Lake Martel), behind which is the latest discovery of the caves, now known as Cueva de los Franceses (Cave of the French). Enjoy a row boat ride across Lake Martel, one of the world’s largest underground lakes accompanied by live classical music. The beauty of the caves can be appreciated thanks to its exceptional lighting. You will stop in Porto Cristo, with a short amount of time to browse at the pearl factory.

Palma is the capital of the Balearic Islands and lies on the southeastern coast of Mallorca Island. A wealth of architectural highlights awaits you. Board your coach and travel to your first stop at the circle-shaped 14th century Bellver Castle, one of the world’s very few rounded castles and the only one of its type in Europe. Built in military-influenced Gothic style, it lies atop a hill affording expansive panoramic views over the city and surrounding countryside.  You will travel on to the handsome 13th century La Seu Cathedral, which presides over the city and is one of Europe’s finest examples of pure ecclesiastic Gothic architecture. After exploring the Cathedral’s interior you will view the exterior of the adjacent Almudaina Palace. This austere palace was originally an Arab fortress and later the palace of Majorcan kings. Before returning to the yacht you will stop to see the unique style and architectural engineering of the city’s famous bullring.

 

Please note: Comfortable shoes with rubber soles are recommended. There are approximately 100 steps from the coach parking area to the La Seu Cathedral. Spanish law requires that motor coach guest’s wear their seat belts at all times while in vehicles that are so equipped. On Sundays and holidays the Cathedral is not open to visitors. The history of the Cathedral will be given outside. When visiting the Cathedral, knees and shoulders must be covered. Bellver Castle is closed on Mondays and the visit will be from the outside only with extra time for shopping.

             

 

 

 

One of the best ways to experience some of Mallorca's dramatic scenery is this train ride across the island that allows you to see the rugged interior. From the port, a short motor coach ride will take you to the train station. You will board the old fashioned electric train for Soller. Learn all about this old fashioned electric train that has preserved its traditional character for almost 100 years. You will be passing almond and locust-bean trees, groves of olive trees and the lush and pine covered mountains.  Arrive in Soller and take a walking tour around this charming village before returning to your yacht.

A short motor coach drive past olive trees and local vegetation brings you to the quaint 14th century village of Valldemossa, located at the foot of the Northern Mountain Range. Its former royal residence, La Cartuja, is the first stop on your tour. The residence became a Carthusian monastery in the Middle Ages and your guide will show you the chapel, a pharmacy, and the monks’ library. Valldemossa’s shining moment was in 1838, when George Sand and Frederic Chopin came to live at the monastery. Their stay here is well documented and a collection of their furniture remains. George Sand later wrote a book about their time here, entitled “A Winter in Majorca.” You will have an opportunity to taste the typical sweets from Valldemosa called Coca de Patata, an individual sweet cake made with potatoes. The drive back to the ship will give you the opportunity to view the impressive cliffs to the north.

Just a few kilometers from the Port of Cartagena, this beautiful hacienda will delight you with the magnificent steeds of the ranch, pure Spanish-bred horses with fine bloodlines and a graceful appearance.  You will have the special opportunity meet the family and ask them questions. These carefully bred horses are sent to horse lovers all over the world. Looking and even touching the broodmares, seeing  the foals and new babies, watching the impressive stampede show, the Spanish Horse Training and the art of managing stallions are some of the things you will enjoy during the visit to the ranch. But just before returning to the pier, and while tasting some snacks you will be treated with an Andalusian dancer and a stallion performance. Discover the essence of the Andalusian region visiting one of the most charming and well-known villages of the famous Costa del Sol, Mijas. After a 45-minute panoramic drive, the coach will bring you to the bottom of this white village, where the narrow streets will take you to the upper point of the village.  You will have a 1-hour, 45-minute guided walking tour of Mijas where you will want to take pictures of the sites, including the Bullfight ring. Also the panorama of the valley will delight all your photographers. Once you have visited the village, you will have your gastronomic experience in a local Restaurant, Secret Garden, where you will be able to taste two kinds of wine, accompanied by delicious Spanish Jamón and cheese tapas. Those of you who delight in ancient history and art lovers cannot miss this tour! With half a million inhabitants, Málaga is located in the center of the Costa del Sol. From the outside you will admire the beautiful architecture of the Alcazaba Fortress, a historic castle built in the 11th century to be the residence of the Arabian Caliphs or Kings. It is connected by a step path to Gibralfaro Castle, an ancient Moorish fortress with breathtaking views of the city and its bay. Buses will take you to the castle so you won’t have to walk up the hill. The Museo Picasso Málaga is run by the Fundación Museo Picasso de Málaga and the Fundación Paul, Christine y Bernard Ruiz-Picasso. The Fundación Paul, Christine y Bernard Ruiz-Picasso is the rightful owner of the collection there, whereas the Fundación Museo Picasso de Málaga owns the group of buildings that holds it. As was initially agreed by the donors, the two foundations are responsible for the conservation, exhibition, study and diffusion of the collection. At the museum, you will be able to appreciate all Picasso styles and techniques (Painting, drawing, sculpture, ceramic and graphic works in an exhibition with 155 works ranging from 1890 up to 1973.

Some things are just plain fun and riding a Segway around Spain definitely falls into that category. It takes a few minutes to get the hang of it; then you'll never want to get off! You'll begin your ride (after an introduction to the operation of the Segway) at Plaza de la Marina, in the center of Málaga. Continue to Larios Street, the main shopping avenue of the city, then on to Merced Square, at the end of Calle Alcazabilla, to see the obelisk erected as a tribute to General Torrijos, currently the headquarters of the Picasso Foundation. Next you will ride to the Santiago Church, built on the site of a former mosque and Málaga's oldest church (founded in 1490). You’ll also visit the Roman Theatre, discovered in 1951, which was built in the time of Caesar Augustus and used until the 3rd century A.D. After that time, it was used as a quarry by the Moors to restore the Alcazaba, which is the next stop on your tour. This impressive building, constructed mainly in the 11th century, was the palace/fortress of the ruling Muslims. You will board your minivan quayside and travel past the American War Memorial and the headquarters of the remaining British Naval forces in Gibraltar as you head toward Europa Point.Here you will have a photo opportunity of the beautiful Straits and the Bay of Gibraltar, the Spanish mainland and the African continent. You will proceed to the Upper Rock area to visit St. Michael’s Cave and the famous Barbary Apes. You will drive past the Moorish Castle and the Tower of Homage to enter the Upper Town area’s narrow streets.

You will board your minivan quayside for the short ride to the Cable Car Base Station.  Your cable car will take you to the Top Station perched on the summit of “The Rock,” for a breathtaking view as you are suspended in mid-air. At the Top Station your guide will show you around the geography of this British colony.  Then you will travel to the Middle Station and the sanctuary of Gibraltar’s old inhabitants, the Barbary Apes, roaming free around this station.  Reboard your coach for a 5-minute drive to Princess Caroline’s Battery and the entrance to the Great Siege Tunnels, a system of tunnels carved out of solid limestone.  Proceed to the Gibraltar Museum with its enormous amount of artifacts on display.

This tour will depart from the port of Cádiz for a visit to the historical center of town and its bay. Your guide will point out the important monuments and landmarks along the way. Watch for the Mudejar-style tobacco factory (1741) which now serves as the Congress building, Santo Domingo Church, the old Royal Prison in Andalusian neo-classical style and the Roman Theatre which overlooks the city’s main cathedral. Before reaching the city center, you will also pass the ancient Phoenician port of La Caleta, the Botanical Gardens and the castle walls that once protected the town. Leave the motorcoach at Plaza de España and start your walking tour through the most typical streets of the city. You will see the Plaza de la Mina, once a monk’s vegetable patch, and the outside of the Cádiz Museum. On Calle Ancha, there are beautiful 19th century palaces and the Cathedral where you can step inside to view an eclectic transition from 13th century Baroque style to 19th century neo-classical style.  Flamenco, a vibrant mixture of dance, song and guitar is the heart and soul of Andalucía. Like the province, flamenco has evolved alongside the contrasting historic influences of Arabic, Jewish, and Gypsy cultures. The Gypsies arrived from India in 1450 and have continued to be pivotal to the development of flamenco. Today, throughout the world there is a demand for a modern, youthful, "flamenco fusion" a blend of flamenco and world music. You will start your tour  with a drive to  Jerez City  and proceed to  visit  a Vineyard, Virey Laserna Palace and  Fundador sherry cellars.  Your tour will start with  a private visit to the Vineyard in Finca El Majuelo, located in Jerez de la Frontera, a town only 30 miles from the sea and the city of Cádiz. The landscape you will see changes from the dry coastal plain to the fertile land near Jerez. The milder climate makes it possible to cultivate the grapes that produce the three main varieties of sherry.  You will visit  Virey Laserna Palace, located in the heart of  the historic center of the city, also known as the Palace of the Conde de los Andes. The beautiful architectural design of the Palace has a neoclassical style reminiscent of an earlier period with a garden and exquisite decorations inside. You will visit  a famous local wine cellar where the time-honored blending process that is responsible for the quality sherry wines will be explained during your guided tour. Afterwards, a tasting of 3 different types of sherry will be offered.

Moorish-influenced Seville lies in the heart of Andalusia, on the Guadalquivir River Plain. Become acquainted with one of Spain’s greatest and most beautiful cities. Travel by motor coach 1¾ hours north to Seville, which features many architectural highlights, including the cathedral, and Casa de Pilatos. After a 1-hour visit to the cathedral, you will stroll through the old Jewish area, known as the Santa Cruz Quarter. Artisans’ shops and quaint cafés occupy whitewashed houses crowded along meandering alleys and charming squares.  Following lunch on your own, you will take in a panoramic overview of Seville seeing such landmark monuments as the Torre del Oro and La Giralda Tower before taking a refreshing stop at the Plaza de España. Pause to admire this impressive square, which is crossed by a canal, before rejoining your motor coach for the 1¾-hour return drive to the ship.

You will continue along Liberty Avenue a charming old boulevard place of several international stores (such as Prada or Armani) lined with gardens and known for its unique black and white mosaics on the sidewalks on the way to Marquês de Pombal Square. The highlight of your visit is the church of the Jeronimos Monastery (outside visit only), a masterpiece of Manueline architecture, widely acknowledged to be the finest sight in Lisbon, built in the 16th century to commemorate the discoveries of Portuguese navigators. Nearby, you will see the lavishly decorated Belem Tower, and the Monument to the Discoveries, built to celebrate the 500th anniversary of the death of Prince Henry the Navigator. On the way to the hotel or to the airport, you will see, stretching across the Tagus River, the April 25th Bridge, sister to the Golden Gate, and the towering Christ the King statue on the far side.
