Catania, Ancient Syracuse
The name of Siracusa suggests a warm climate, blue skies, a beautiful bay, and the ancient ruins of a Greek city which was the rival of Athens.   You will board your bus for the 75-minute ride to Neapolis Archaeological Park which was created between 1952 and 1955 and contains many classical monuments. For security reasons you will only have access to the Greek Theatre and part of the Latomia del Paradiso, one of the ancient stone quarries; the other monuments can be viewed from a distance. This doesn’t detract in any way from the powerful fascination of this unique place. The Greek Theatre, dated back to 5th century B.C,. is one of the largest and best preserved theaters of the ancient world.  The Roman Amphitheater which is hewn out of the rocks, dates from 2nd century A.D., and the entrance and gangways for animals and gladiators can still be seen. You’ll proceed to Ortigia and walk about a half a mile to Old Town Ortigia.   You will visit Arethusa Fountain the legendary cradle of the city. From the nearby platform there is a view of the beautiful Bay of Siracusa, you will proceed to the Cathedral built in the 7th century on the foundation of the former Temple of Minerva, using the nine columns which can be seen on the north side and the 19 columns of the nave..

Please note: This tour has a substantial amount of walking and is not recommended for people with limited mobility or walking difficulties. The bus is not wheelchair accessible..

You’ll see the steam created from the activity of Piano Provenzana and the wonderful views from atop one of Europe’s most active volcanoes. After your exciting morning you’ll enjoy a typical Sicilian lunch.

Trapani, Walking Tour with Sicilian Coffee Break
Trapani is an attractive old port town, rediscovering its charms after years of neglect. Halfway between Europe and Tunis, it was a rich trading center throughout the early Middle Ages, then, flourished again in the 19th and early 20th centuries as a stronghold of the tuna-canning industry. After that, it went into decline, and became a salty old port. Then, it was selected to host the 2004 America’s Cup and received a massive injection of cash – buildings were restored, streets in the historic center pedestrianized – giving the town and its people a new confidence. These days Trapani is a thoroughly pleasant place to hang out for a couple of days. You will join your guide for a pleasant walking visit of the historical center of Trapani, with its many churches and palazzos with their ornate façades and elaborate interior, perfect examples of the Baroque style. At the end of the guided visit, enjoy a typical Sicilian coffee break including one cannolo and one coffee or one cappuccino, followed by 45 minute free time. At the conclusion of your tour you can leisurely walk back to the pier with your guide or continue to spend time in town returning to the ship on your own.

Please note: Wear comfortable walking shoes, a hat, and sunscreen. Proper attire that covers shoulders and knees is required for both men and women to enter religious venues. This tour is not suitable for those with walking difficulties because of the many stairs and slopes to climb.

Sorrento, Concierge Collection: The Jewels of the Amalfi Coast
Board a private vehicle for the drive to Positano. Its charms are still evident; square, white Moorish-style houses set in luxurious gardens, descend in steep steps from the mountainside to the bay. Positano is dominated by the splendid church of Santa Maria Assunta. Piazzettas and cafés are filled with people pausing during the 100-step climb that leads up the hillside. Enjoy time at leisure for shopping and a drink at a café. You will continue on to Amalfi, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. After a visit to the Cloister of Paradise, built between 1266 and 1268, you will enjoy a delightful typical lunch before proceeding to Ravello, also a UNESCO World Heritage Site, which stretches along the side of rocky cliffs overlooking the sea. You will marvel at the rocks rising out of the sea. Whitewashed villages dot the steep hillsides and cluster in the coves below. You will visit the Villa Rufolo, the 11th century Barisano da Trani, and a pulpit decorated with mosaic lions in the Cathedral. You will have free time to browse and shop before returning to Sorrento.

Please note: This tour is not for guests with physical limitations as it involves a great deal of walking over uneven terrain. Wear comfortable shoes, a sun hat, sunglasses and sunscreen.

Sorrento, Herculaneum
The city of Herculaneum, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, was founded around the 4th century B.C., copying the geometric regularity of the layout of Naples. Its “decumani” (main streets) have an east-west orientation, while the “cardines” (narrower streets) run north-south. There is undeniably a “feeling” about Herculaneum, quite different from Pompeii, where you get the impression that its ancient population of 5,000 packed up and left only moments ago. Herculaneum was smaller than Pompeii but is better preserved simply because, while hot ashes consumed the wood of Pompeii’s buildings, Herculaneum was covered by hot mud which sealed and protected entire city blocks. This means that marble floors, mosaics, paintings and carbonized woods can still be admired today. You will discover the ancient luxurious properties and villas including the House of the Mosaic, the House of Deer, the Thermae (baths) and the House of Carbonized Furniture. After a guided tour, you will be driven back to meet the yacht in Sorrento.

Please note: This tour involves considerable walking on uneven pathways. Bring a sun hat, as shade is limited. Comfortable walking shoes are recommended.
