The ancient remains of Athens constitute one of the brightest jewels of the Mediterranean. The Ancient City and the Acropolis, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, have been kept fairly intact. You will see perhaps the most famous temple of the Ancient City, the Parthenon. Walking up a winding path towards the Acropolis, you will pass through the Propylaea, which is the entrance to the Acropolis and see the Erechtheum Temple, built between 421-405 B.C. and famous for its exquisite attention to detail. You will also see the Porch of the Caryatids, (or Porch of the Maidens), in the distance. Reinforced by man, the natural fortress of the Acropolis stands 230 feet above the city. You cannot help but be impressed by the wide-sweeping view below. The intent of the new Acropolis Museum is to house every artifact found on the archaeological site.  You will see the unsurpassed quality of the masterpieces of ancient Athens, including the entire sculpted decoration of the Parthenon as it was on the building. You will see many architectural phases and thousands of finds that provide valuable insight into the everyday activities of ancient Greece.

Kephalonia is the largest of the Ionian island renowned for it’s many caves, fir forests and fine beaches. From the quayside at Argostoli you will proceed towards Drogarati Cave. Upon your arrival at the cave you will proceed down a flight of steps leading to a cavern of orange and yellow stalactites and stalagmites. One of the great chambers has such fine acoustics that Maria Callas came there to sing, and concerts are occasionally held in the summer. You will then proceed in a northerly direction passing the town of Sami to the subterranean lake of Melissani. Small boats will be waiting to take you on a breathtaking trip across its mysterious salt water encircling you in a vast shimmering play of blue and violet colors, captured by the sun filtering through a hole in the chasm, 100 feet overhead. The water begins where you did in Argostoli, entering through swallow holes in the coast and traveling under the island to this cave.  The tour will continue along the coast with spectacular views across the strait to the neighboring island of Ithaca, before arriving at Aghia Efthimia, standing at the base of Kephalonia’s northernmost peninsular. You will then proceed west to Myrtos, where sheer white cliffs carpeted by green maquis frame a stunning crescent of tiny white pebbles and patches of sand against the deep blue sea.

 

Please note: This tour involves a lot of driving. Although the roads are mostly in very good condition some parts contain a certain amount of winding uphill driving. Passengers suffering from motion sickness should take this into consideration. The visit to Melissani Lake will involve a certain amount of walking and steps. The boats at the lake are small with 12 seats each. There are quite a few steps to be considered at Drogarati Cave. Guests with physical limitations or suffering from claustrophobia and/or breathing problems are kindly requested to take this into account. Wear comfortable walking shoes.

           

 

 

 

The Monastery of St. Andrew is famous for housing a bizarre relic which is claimed to be the sole of St. Andrew’s right foot. During the 1953 earthquake the whitewashed covering of the inside of the church was loosened and revealed frescoes dating back to the 13th and 17th centuries which are now considered to be the island’s biggest artistic treasures. At the Robola Winery you will visit the winery and you will get an insight into the production methods of the famous and rare Robola wine made from a local species of white grape which comes in red, white and sweet Muscat. The Kourkoumelata village after the earthquake of 1953 was rebuilt by a local wealthy citizen who financed the whole village to be built in a neo-classical style.  Here you will be given the opportunity to wander through the village and admire the sweeping views of the sea below. A photo stop will also be made at the Castle of St. George before you return to the port.

Please note:  Buses are not permitted to enter the town of Taormina. Guests will get to the city center from the parking lot by lifts. Keep in mind that Taormina can be very crowded.

             

 

Leaving the pier by coach, you will begin with a brief drive through Messina for a 45-minute trip via the freeway and then motor along the coastal road bordered by villas, flowering gardens, and picturesque villages to reach Savoca. Its scenic beauty and historical-artistic heritage makes Savoca, one of the most attractive and unknown places of Taormina. In a private house in the village, "Bar Vitelli," houses a collection of local artisans' tools and photographs taken when Francis Ford Coppola shot scenes of "The Godfather II."  After a typical refreshment  begin a walking tour along the village's main street past two Churches of the 15th and 16th centuries, ( Santa Lucia and San Michele ) and to enjoy the view over the valley. Continue to Forza d'Agro, a 20-minute drive towards Taormina, a charming little village overlooking the Arab-Norman castle of Capo Sant'Alessio. In 1990, Al Pacino and Sophia Coppola arrived there to shoot scenes for the film, "The Godfather III." From the main square, a lane leads up to the circular steps, which ascend to the Gothic-Catalan portal in front of the Church of St. Agostino also known as “Triade.“  Before departing, see the Baroque Chiesa Madre.

To see the best of Sicily, you have to climb to great heights. And on this trip you’ll do exactly that. After a 45-minute coach drive to the cable station, you’ll take the cable car up to the top of a mountain. Take in the view out over the Trapani Salt Pans, the turquoise sea and all the way to the Egadi Islands – it’s breathtaking. While you’re up here, you’ll explore the medieval town that is Erice. Wander the winding cobbled streets, listen to your guide give an informational takl outside the the Mother Church that’s stood there for over 700 years, and admire the Castle of Venus where the son of Athena, goddess of love, built a temple in his mother’s honor. And save some sighs for the gorgeous Balio Gardens in all their rainbow bright glory. Last, but not least, you’ll have time to enjoy the atmosphere in Erice’s tiny plaza, before you take the cable car back down to your waiting ship.

 

Please note: The shops are open from 9:30 a.m. until 1:00 p.m. and from 4:30 p.m. until 7:30 p.m., and closed on Sunday. If the cable car cannot be used for operational reasons, a coach will be used instead.  Knees and shoulders must be covered when visiting any religious sites in Italy and since Erice is 2,467 feet above sea level, and generally chillier than Trapani it is recommended you bring a sweater or light jacket. You will meet your guide and board your motor coach for the 1-hour drive to Marsala and spend time in the historical center. Marsala is the most western situated city in Sicily and the fifth biggest city in Sicily with 80,000 inhabitants.  You will visit the picturesque city center and the Marsala Cathedral, which was built on the foundations of a preexisting Norman castle, with an organ with 4,317 pipes. Marsala is also famous for the production of excellent Marsala wines and after your walk in the city you will go to the most important winery of the region, the renowned Cantine Pellegrino to see how fortified wine is made and to taste it for yourself. After a light lunch at the winery you will be driven back to the ship.

Trapani is an attractive old port town, rediscovering its charms after years of neglect. Halfway between Europe and Tunis, it was a rich trading center throughout the early Middle Ages, then, flourished again in the 19th and early 20th centuries as a stronghold of the tuna-canning industry. After that, it went into decline, and became a salty old port. Then, it was selected to host the 2004 America’s Cup and received a massive injection of cash – buildings were restored, streets in the historic center pedestrianized – giving the town and its people a new confidence. These days Trapani is a thoroughly pleasant place to hang out for a couple of days. You will join your guide for a pleasant walking visit of the historical center of Trapani, with its many churches and palazzos with their ornate façades and elaborate interior, perfect examples of the Baroque style. At the end of the guided visit, enjoy a typical Sicilian coffee break including one cannolo and one coffee or one cappuccino, followed by 45 minutes of free time. At the conclusion of your tour you can leisurely walk back to the pier with your guide or continue to spend time in town returning to the ship on your own.

Start your tour driving  along  Carlo Felice Route to the Museum Village of San Sperate. In 1967 , San Sperate became a museum village and hosts  many works of important Italian  and foreign artists. The idea to transform  San Sperate into a museum village was born  in 1966 by Pinuccio Sciola, who painted all the walls with white on the occasion  of the Corpus Christi feast and invited several artists to paint their works on the village walls. In 1973 Felice traveled to Mexico City to work with David Alfaro Siqueiros. In 1976 he attended the Venice Biennale and in 1984 he exhibited at Besana and Piazza degli Affari, Milan. In 1985 his works were the Quadrennial in Rome and between1986 and 1987 a large traveling exhibition toured the most important cities in Germany. Then head for Dolianova where  you will visit an old mill which  produces olive oil. Dolianova has an old tradition in olive oil production. Then on to the village of Serdiana, where you will visit the Argiolas vineyards, famous for producing the best Sardinian wine. Visit the cellars excavated underground and formed by several vaulted rooms offering ideal climatic conditions. After this visit, nothing better than to delight you with a tasting of red and white wines accompanied by Sardinian cheese and sausages typical of the area. Return to Cagliari and the yacht  or leave the coach close to the port entrance and visit the old town center on your own.

Begin your excursion with a short drive to the old Cagliari Fish Market. The San Benedetto market is considered to be the largest covered fish market in Italy  and the varieties of fish you will come across is just stunning.  Cagliari is very well served in terms of municipal markets, boasting five in total. These should not just be seen as somewhere useful to do your shopping, though naturally they serve this purpose very well, but as an excellent place to absorb a little of the local culture and its traditions. After the visit of the fish market your tour continues  with a panoramic coach tour of the town passing in front of Bonaria Church  and the Poetto Beach  up to Monte Urpinu, from the top of the hill you can enjoy a beautiful view of Cagliari. Then you will take a walking tour through the old town, starting from the wonderful location of “Porta Cristina,“ visiting the 13th century Romanesque-Pisan Cathedral, with its portal, pulpits, paintings  and original bell tower, then the “ Elephant Tower “ built by the  Republic of Pisa , who dominated Cagliari until the 12th century.   A beautiful panorama is  clearly visible from the impressive “ Bastione di Saint Remy“ built on the top of the historical district of “Marina.” Return to the yacht.

You'll see a Cathedral that the Pisans built in the 13th  century, the Archbishop's Palace, and the Governor's Palace, which was once the seat of government.   At the end of your promenade you will reach the Antico Caffè built in 1855. The bar owes much of its charm to the fascinating stories which make up its history. It was here that Sibilla Aleramo waited for her lover, sitting at a table near the bar, but she was not alone. Grazia Deledda, Emilio Lussu, D.H. Lawrence, Gabriele D’Annunzio, Salvatore Quasimodo, Elio Vittorini and Beniamino Gigli are just some of the illustrious figures to have patronized and loved this haunt.  A snack of some dishes of Cagliari cuisine will be served for a 60 relaxing minutes  in the special atmosphere of the Antico Caffè.  Return to your yacht or continue on your own to visit this beautiful Mediterranean Town.

Setting out from the port by coach, you will find it easy to relax and enjoy this driving tour of Spain’s most fascinating city, Barcelona, a lovely Mediterranean stronghold of architectural interest. You will drive along one of Barcelona’s most famous streets, the Passeig de Gracia, lined with different Modernist buildings, many of which were designed by architect Antoni Gaudí. Watch for Casa Batlló, an iconic Barcelona landmark and Casa Mila. You will drive by one of Gaudí’s masterpieces – the Sagrada Familia (Holy Family) Church (outside visit). This is a site not to be missed. Though construction was started in 1882 it is still unfinished. This UNESCO World Heritage Site is the most-visited building in Barcelona, and immediately identifies the city around the world. From here you’ll head up to the viewpoint in Montjuic with the most exceptional views of Barcelona and its impressive harbor.
 

Please note: This tour will end  at  your Windstar hotel. This tour is available only to guests staying overnight in Barcelona. An inside visit to the Sagrada Familia is not included.   The Cathedral is closed to tours.
