St. Peter Port, Castle Cornet Town Walk
Join your local guide on a tour to the center of the town of St Peter Port, which has a fascinating history. A busy port since Roman times, the deep, safe anchorage and relative remoteness from France has made the town the Channel Islands’ premier port. It is a picturesque town with cobbled high streets and narrow alleys and regency buildings. From the harbor, you will see Castle Cornet, originally built on an island and now reachable by a raised walkway built in the 19th  century. Built on the site of Neolithic and Bronze Age settlements, the castle has been built, partially destroyed and rebuilt many times with Medieval, Tudor and World War 2 remains. The castle dates from the 13th  century when It began as a fortification against the French after the island decided to side with England following the loss of Normandy. It has been used as a garrison, arsenal and prison. Castle Cornet guards the entrance to Guernsey’s harbor and offered defense of the seaway between the islands of Herm, Jethou and Guernsey and towards Sark over many centuries.  See and hear the key highlights of the castle with your guide before spending some time in the ‘Story of Castle Cornet’ exhibition, or exploring the castle and perhaps some of the  four small gardens within the castle walls - including the apothecary’s garden, kitchen garden and ornamental gardens. The castle contains a number of interesting museums including the Maritime Museum, the Story of Castle Cornet Museum, the 201 Squadron RAF (Guernsey's Own) Museum and the Militia Museum. After your visit to the castle, return with your guide or on your own to St Peter Port harbor and the ship.

Driving through the countryside, located along the quiet canals, you will stop nearby the village of Coulon. As your boat slips across the water's placid surface, marvel at the astonishing quiet of the marsh, completely silent except for the occasional sounds of the resident wildlife and the ones coming from the scattered small white-washed houses, homes of the happy inhabitants of this land. You may see plovers, swans, snipes, and ashen and crimson herons. Depending on the season, you may even observe hundreds of wild geese making their migration to Spain. Your skilled captain will guide your boat through the tunnels created by the arched limbs of poplars and ash, along the shores of property owned by prosperous farmers and past small, picturesque villages. You will leave the shore side on a 30-minute drive to venture into  Sare and the mountainous part of the Basque Country. You will board the train and being your journey up La Rhune Mountain, covered in dolmens, stone circles and other Neolithic monuments and held to be a sacred place in Basque mythology. Later on considered as a ritual meeting place for witches, the mountain became, up until the 18th century, home to a hermit monk whose duty was to keep witches away and ensure good winds. A few centuries later, the mountain became a notable smuggling route, especially for refugees during the Spanish Civil War and World War II. At 2,969 feet high, La Rhune is today a popular site for walks and hikes, but is also known for its rack railway, the Petit Train de la Rhune. Built in 1924 and perfectly maintained, this train with wooden carriages will take you to the top of La Rhune Mountain, where you will enjoy exceptional views from the 360° viewing terraces: and see from the French coast across the Pyrenees Mountain range, and out to the Spanish Northern coast, far reaching in all directions.
