Fowey, Concierge Collectioin: Exclusive Visit & Lunch at Boconnoc
Depart the pier by coach for Boconnoc, a breath-taking country estate with a long and fascinating history dating back to 1086. Be greeted with a cup of tea or coffee on arrival at Boconnoc, which is open especially for your exclusive visit, before departing on a guided tour around the house, church and grounds. Discover how during World War II, Americans took over Boconnoc and by the time the owners returned, the house had fallen into disrepair due to a lack of money. By the early 1950’s, the owners left the property and it was abandoned for the next 30 years. When Anthony and Elizabeth Fortescue, the current owners, bought Boconnoc and began restoring it, the whole roof had to be redone, there were plants growing through windows and you could see the top floor from the basement in one of the rooms. They restored the house back to life with a 12-year restoration project, which was awarded the Historic Houses Association / Sotheby’s Restoration Award and the Georgian Group Architectural Award for the Restoration of a Country Mansion in 2012. Along the way, see why this estate, with all its diversity, is a popular film location due to it appearing untouched by the 21st century and offers easy access to beautiful locations. Films such as The Three Musketeers and My Cousin Rachel were shot at Boconnoc, as well as the television program Poldark. Following your tour, meet with the current owners (subject to availability) and hear a poem written about the previous owners of the house before enjoying a light lunch accompanied by a glass of wine, taking in the beauty of the surroundings. After lunch, there’s free-time for you to relax or explore the estate at leisure before commencing the journey back to the ship.

Fowey, Lanhydrock House
Leaving the small town of Fowey, travel through the Cornish countryside to Lanhydrock House.  Situated in idyllic gardens, this is declared to be the finest house in Cornwall.  It was built in the 17th century but in 1881 was almost entirely destroyed by fire leaving only the granite gatehouse and the north wing, where the Long Gallery is located, with its fine plasterwork. The first Lord and Lady Robartes never recovered from the shock of the fire and both died shortly afterwards. Their son, the second Lord Robartes, rebuilt it with every Victorian convenience to meet the needs of his large family and what you see today is a superb example of late Victorian living. The unique aspect of Lanhydrock is that the below stairs areas and servants quarters have been retained in their original condition offering a fascinating insight into life “in service” around the turn of the last century. Wander around the estate and beautiful gardens and absorb the atmosphere of serene antiquity surrounding the estate. At 11 am the doors to the house will open to embark on a 1-hour visit of the house, with stewards on hand to share with you their knowledge of the house. There will be an opportunity to visit the delightful National Trust shop prior to returning to Fowey.

Fowey, Plymouth & The Mayflower
Depart Fowey and embark on your Journey to Plymouth. The ancient city of Plymouth is perhaps one of the best-known Maritime cities in the world. From here The Pilgrim fathers set sail aboard the Mayflower for the New World in 1620 and Sir Francis Drake sailed to defeat the invading Spanish Armada. 2020 will commemorate the 400th anniversary of the Mayflower's pioneering voyage. En-route to Plymouth take a short comfort stop and stretch your legs at Kernow Mill, Trerulefoot near Liskeard. Depart your coach and experience the city on foot with an expert local guide.  Walk out of the docks and start your heritage walk on Plymouth Hoe, where Drake was famously playing bowls when he received news of the invading Armada and is reported to have said.  ‘We have time to finish the game’ Enjoy fine panoramic views of the area and out to sea across Plymouth Sound. Nearby lies the fortified garrison, or Citadel, and continuing down the gradual slope, arrive at the historic Barbican. This is the original trading dock of the city and is the place from where the Pilgrim Fathers departed. Now the warehouses are home to fashionable galleries, cafes and quaint antique shops.  See the famous Mayflower steps where the pilgrims set sail on their voyage to the New World and enjoy a guided tour around The Barbican. Next, enjoy lunch at a restaurant on the Barbican before spending some time at your leisure either shopping or site seeing. The Mayflower Centre stands as a Tourist Information Office and a fascinating museum. Visit here at your leisure (entrance prices not included) and see the history of Plymouth and Sutton Harbour. The Mayflower Museum brings to life the cramped reality of being onboard the Mayflower for the 102 Pilgrims and 30 odd crew who made the journey.

Scilly Isles, Exotic Tresco Abbey Gardens
Tender ashore to the island of Tresco where you will be met by your guide today. Tresco is best known for its Abbey Gardens, laid out by the remarkable Augustus Smith – a wealthy merchant banker who purchased the islands from the Duchy of Cornwall in the mid-1830s. Work on the gardens commenced in 1834 on the site of the old Benedictine Abbey. By building tall wind-breaks, Smith channeled the weather up and over the network of walled enclosures he built around the Priory ruins. He also carved the three terraces from the rocky, south-facing slope looking towards St. Mary’s.  Tresco, shrugging off salt spray and Atlantic gales is host to 20,000 exotic plants, many of which would stand no chance on the Cornish mainland, less than 30 miles away. Yet even at the winter equinox more than 300 plants will be in flower. All in all, the garden is home to glorious species from 80 countries, ranging from Brazil to New Zealand and Burma to South Africa. Subsequent generations have continued the development of the Garden, which is today a major attraction of the islands.

Please note:  Access is not a problem, the gardens are terraced but most have slopes that can be negotiated by  a wheelchair although there are some steps. Wheelchair guests must be accompanied as the guide cannot undertake responsibility for them during the tour.  Dress for the weather and comfortable sturdy footwear is recommended. If guests struggle to walk a distance there is a complimentary small shuttle bus from the pier to the gardens.

Scilly Isles, St Marys Garrison Walk
The Isles of Scilly are an archipelago of five inhabited islands and other small rocky islets situated 28 miles from Lands End, the most southwesterly point of the British Isles. With a total population of just over 2,000, an exceptionally mild climate, beautiful flowers and countless white sandy beaches, they are also known for their friendliness, birds, clear turquoise sea, and ancient sites and monuments. Your local guide will meet you at St Mary’s quay and give a short introductory talk about the history of the Isles. Then venture off on foot to enjoy a scenic tour of the Garrison on the isle of St Mary’s and look across to Bryher and Tresco, marveling that even though you can walk between them, they are so utterly different. Enjoy the beautiful views before ending up in Star Castle to enjoy a tea or coffee in the 16th Century Castle Dungeon Bar. Star Castle is now a hotel, but it was built as an impregnable fortress back in 1593 and gets its name from the shape of its eight-sided central keep, curtain wall and dry moat. Just to the right of the castle you'll see a campsite and just right of this a footpath branches right and takes you down to Steval Point Battery, which marks the island's most westerly point. On a clear day you'll enjoy fabulous views over to St Agnes and distant, lonely Bishop's Rock Lighthouse. Following refreshments there will be an opportunity for you to explore Hugh Town at your leisure which is the main and largest settlement on the Island, before returning to your ship.

For six centuries Sintra was the favorite summer residence of the kings of Portugal, who were attracted by the cool climate and the lush beauty of the town’s setting.  Writers and poets in general – Lord Byron, Alfred Tennyson, Hans Christian Andersen, and Isaac Bashevis Singer chose Sintra as a preferred destination. The tall conical chimneys of the National Palace and the fabulous Pena Palace, are two unmistakable landmarks of this area. You will have the opportunity to taste local pastry in one of the cafés in Sintra before free time to explore this town recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1995. Return back to your Windstar Hotel in Lisbon.
