Monemvasia Castle
Monemvasia is unique among ruined medieval cities in that it is entirely built on a rock that appears to be barren when seen from the mainland. Your tour will commence with a walk through the narrow streets within the castle walls, so tiny that in many places only two people can walk side by side. You will see the ruins of houses and Byzantine churches — most in ruins with the fortunate exception of the Church of Christ Elkomenos. This cathedral dates back to the 13th century, but features alterations made during the Venetian occupation of Monemvasia. Four surviving ancient Byzantine icons are on display.

Please note: Wear comfortable walking shoes, sunglasses, and sunscreen. Bring a hat. Guests must be physically fit. Minivans will operate as shuttles from the tender to the gate of the Old Town as larger coaches are not permitted on the road to the Old Town.

Monemvasia is unique among ruined medieval cities in that it is entirely built on a rock that appears to be barren when seen from the mainland. Your tour will commence with a walk through the narrow streets at the castle, where the streets are so tiny that in many places only two people can walk side by side. While strolling along these narrow lanes you will see ruined houses and Byzantine churches and Church of Christ Elkomenos. This cathedral dates back to the 13th century, but features alterations made during the Venetian occupation of Monemvasia. Then you will visit “Liotrivi”(Olive Oil Factory), a fully restored historic mansion that previously was the home of the family Ritsos, where the world-renowned poet lived during his childhood.  You will have a guided tour in the old olive mill and learn the traditional method of producing extra virgin olive oil.  You will walk to the vineyards and the olive groves. In a patio area, an experienced cook will knead and bake traditional bread in a wood-oven. The bread made, along with other local products, will be served to you in an appetizer buffet under the olive trees where you will have the opportunity to also taste the famous wines of Monemvasia.

Gythion, Dyros Caves
Leaving Gythion, your tour will cross the Mani Peninsula to Dyros to visit the spectacular caves of Vlyhada and Alepotrypa, first opened to the public in 1963. You will ride for almost a mile through “caverns measureless to man.” Aided by electricity, the splendors of nature are on show. You will see formations that look like, and are named after, great sites such as the Metropolitan Throne, the Leaning Tower of Pisa and the Chinese Palace. At the bottom of one of the lakes of Vlyhada, often considered the most beautiful cave in the world, many interesting things have been discovered, such as fossils of hippopotami. After your cave visit you will drive to nearby Areopolis for a short stroll through the town, before returning to Gythion.

Please note:  Since the temperature in the caves is cooler you may want to bring a light jacket.

Gythion, Mystras Byzantine City
This tour by motorcoach will cross the plain of Laconia through its orange and olive groves, with the mighty Taygetus Mountain (7,897 ft.) in the background to arrive in Sparta, which today is a big, modern town. As the original Spartans cared little for buildings and lived a “Spartan” existence in barracks, their ancient architecture was simple and basic. Today, its scanty remains reflect little of Sparta’s ancient renown. Four miles west however, sits the medieval town of Mystras, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, with its churches and houses, monasteries and palaces lining the steep narrow streets. For 200 years, from the middle of the 13th century, this Byzantine town flourished. From the mid-15th century to the beginning of our century, the town was in constant decline, with the exception of a few years during which it was under Venetian control. However, the magnificence of the Byzantine architecture, remarkably preserved and sensitively restored, gives you the impression you are entering a whole different age.

Please note: The site is located on a very steep hill so flat rubber shoes are recommended.

Please note:  Mystras is not wheelchair accessible and steps are involved.  It is not possible to stay on the motor coach during that portion of the tour.

Messina, Classic Taormina
Taormina perches on a terrace overlooking the sea and epitomizes the legendary beauty of Sicily. A one-hour drive brings you to the outskirts of this picturesque site which was founded in the 3rd century B.C. Although almost completely renovated by the Romans, it now reflects a medieval character that is truly captivating. After arriving near Taormina’s center, your guide will accompany you on a walking tour along cobblestone streets to Palazzo Corvaja, a 15th century building whose arched windows and doorways reflect its strong Arabic influence. Next, you will stroll to the 3rd century Greco-Roman Theater, spectacularly situated overlooking Mount Etna and Naxos Bay. Renowned for its expansive size and unique acoustic qualities, it is still used for open-air concerts. After free time to stroll or shop along the famous Corso Umberto, you will rejoin the coach for the 60-minute journey back to the yacht.

Sorrento, Herculaneum
The city of Herculaneum, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, was founded around the 4th century B.C., copying the geometric regularity of the layout of Naples. Its “decumani” (main streets) have an east-west orientation, while the “cardines” (narrower streets) run north-south. There is undeniably a “feeling” about Herculaneum, quite different from Pompeii, where you get the impression that its ancient population of 5,000 packed up and left only moments ago. Herculaneum was smaller than Pompeii but is better preserved simply because, while hot ashes consumed the wood of Pompeii’s buildings, Herculaneum was covered by hot mud which sealed and protected entire city blocks. This means that marble floors, mosaics, paintings and carbonized woods can still be admired today. You will discover the ancient luxurious properties and villas including the House of the Mosaic, the House of Deer, the Thermae (baths) and the House of Carbonized Furniture. After a guided tour, you will be driven back to meet the yacht in Sorrento.

The Genoese needed a city and port which could ensure contact between their “homeland” and their “colony.” Even if this small port was swept by terrible  winds, it was protected by a rock, easily defensible, and upon which a dungeon (or bastiglia) was built- and hence the name of the town Bastua. Bastia, Corsican Tales And Legends
Bastia was founded by the Genoese in 1380, when they were looking for a naturally sheltered port to replace the ancient Roman city of Mariana and Biguglia (which had been destroyed by the Corsicans in 1372).  They needed a city and port which could assure the contact between their “Homeland” and their “colony”. Even if this small port was swept by terrible winds, it was protected by a rock,  easily defensible, and upon which a dungeon (or bastiglia) was built- and hence the name of the town Bastia. The numerous religious buildings dotted all over the island bear witness to the profound religious fervor of its inhabitants and their attachment to the Catholic faith. Despite this, the collective consciousness remains steeped in many pagan traditions, with relics of ancient beliefs. The mystical spirit of Corsica finds its true expression during the great Christian festivals, however the barrier between the natural and supernatural world is extremely permeable and Corsica is teeming with visionaries, faith healers, and mediums. This walking tour will take you to some purportedly haunted sites, and give you an overview of the superstitions and local legends which still hold sway.

Calvi, Pigna & Wine Appreciation At Clos Culombu
On the heights of the inner Balagne  lies the small village of Pigna. This town in Corsica is a beautiful village charm, true haunt of artists and artisans who made it famous. The village is attractive with its beautiful flowered streets and its main square. It is one of the finest examples of the architecture of this region of flourishing medieval villages set on rocky spurs. After your Pigna visit you will drive to Domaine Culombu. Corsica produces several very good wines, which are hardly known outside the island and visiting a vineyard for an afternoon is a pleasant experience. Today the domaine, in conversion to the mode of organic farming, produces vines nielluccio, sciaccarello, vermentino, grenache and cinsault. The domaine is mainly recognized for the elaboration of its white wines and its rosés; stemming from first juices, in the very pale grey, the specialty of Calvi. Here you will enjoy a wine tasting of 3 wines with snacks and will be offered a bottle ow wine as well.

Please note: In the summer months, heavy traffic can be expected in the popular town of Pigna, which may cause delays. The coach is unable to drive into the center of San Antonino and will park below the village; care should be taken walking into the village as the steps up are steep and uneven. Calvi, Saint Florent
Discover northern Corsica, from Calvi to Lozari. You will skirt the popular summer resorts of St. Ambroggio or Algajola and marvel at the breathtaking view over the glistening blue sea and white sandy beaches. Pass the little town of Ile Rousse (Red Island), which takes its name from the red granite peninsula at the end of the bay before the road turns inland towards the Désert des Agriates. Despite its name, this was once a very fertile region. In fact, agriates means cultivated fields, and the desert was considered the Garden of Corsica thanks to its orchards with various fruit trees, olive trees, wheat and vineyards. However, during the 18th  and 19th  centuries, fires and soil erosion reduced the region to a desert and the land was almost abandoned. Today the Desert des Agriates is a protected wildlife reserve. You will finally reach Saint Florent  - beloved by the rich and famous and yet somehow retaining its small fishing-port personality with pretty, narrow streets and little boutiques. Your guide will set you free for a stroll on your own or a drink along the marina. Those in search of a good walk can hike to the circular Genoese citadel built in 1439. It completely dominates the town and offers a wonderful 360° view. The St. Maria Assunta Cathedral is located a half-mile from the town center and is worth a visit for its fine Pisan-Romanesque architecture.

Barcelona Highlights Tour & Transfer to Airport
Setting out from the port by coach, you will find it easy to relax and enjoy this driving tour of Spain’s most fascinating city, Barcelona, a lovely Mediterranean stronghold of architectural interest. Your guide will point out all the highlights as the coach drives up Via Laietana en route to the Cathedral de la Santa Creu I Santa Eulalia. A guided tour within the 13th century cathedral, will give you the opportunity to admire the hall church interior, suitably impressive with a raised altar and the beautiful Chapel of Santa Lucía.  You will drive along one of Barcelona’s most famous streets, the Passeig de Gracia, lined with different Modernist buildings, many of which were designed by architect Antoni Gaudí. Watch for Casa Batlló, an iconic Barcelona landmark and Casa Mila. You will drive by one of Gaudí’s masterpieces – the Sagrada Familia (Holy Family) Church. This is a site not to be missed. Though construction was started in 1882 it is still unfinished. This UNESCO World Heritage Site is the most-visited building in Barcelona, and immediately identifies the city around the world. From here you’ll head up to the El Mirador Alcalde garden with the most exceptional views of Barcelona and its impressive harbor.

Please note: This tour will end at the airport. This tour is available only to guests whose flights leave at 3:00 p.m. or later. The Cathedral is closed to tours on Sundays. Shoulders and knees must be covered to enter the Cathedral.

Barcelona Montserrat with Transfer to Airport
Your tour departs from the port for the 1-hour drive to reach Montserrat, a peculiar rocky mountain range which is the site of the monastery where people come to worship “La Moreneta,” the black Madonna who is the patron-virgin of Catalonia.  The Benedictine Monastery of Montserrat was founded in the 11th century and is located in a natural park 37 miles west of Barcelona. Besides visiting the Benedictine Abbey Monastery, you will admire also the Patron of Catalonia, Saint Mary of Montserrat that is worshiped at the shrine in the Monastery. The Benedictine community, now numbering some 80 monks, has served the shrine for almost 1,000 years. They are dedicated to a life of prayer, to working and to welcoming pilgrims, making the site a place for dialogue, prayer and culture. In addition to the monks, the escolans also live in Montserrat. They form the oldest boys choir in Europe ( and might be available during the visit). You will be given a tour of the monastery, and have some free time before taking the coach to the airport.

Please note:  Comfortable shoes, water, a light jacket and a hat are recommended. There are downhill and uneven paths, plus cobblestones to walk over. There may be long lines to view the Black Virgin up close.  This excursion may operate in reverse. Access to the Basilica might be denied if mass is taking place. Shoulders and knees must be covered to enter monastery.  This tour will end at the airport and is available only to guests whose flights leave at 3:00 p.m. or later.
