Motril, Alhambra Palace with Gardens
Granada is located between the El Genil and El Darro Rivers at the bottom of the Sierra Nevada Mountains. There, sun and snow mix with each other adding to the charm of the city enchantment and mystery. The city itself is beautiful, with the Cathedral, a masterpiece of Renaissance style. Constructed after the reconquering of Granada by the Christians, it was constructed over Granada's largest mosque; you'll also visit the Royal Chapel with its treasures  and beautiful Gothic style; but many say that nothing in all of Spain compares to the wealth of architectural art to be found in the city's Muslim-Hispano complex: the 14th century Alhambra. This breathtaking example of Muslim architecture is completely encircled by walls and towers, and inside it we find palaces, military buildings, a fortress, an administrative center.  Plenty of time is allowed to explore this remarkable structure whose detailed mosaics, prism-style cupolas and stone-cast latticework speak to a surprising grace and sophistication. The nearby Generalife, surrounded by water gardens, was the residence of kings in need of refuge, and in direct contrast, the stunning  El Vino Gate commissioned by Carlos V is built in purest Renaissance style in the 16th century. A pleasant lunch will be served in a nearby Ruta del Veleta and after lunch you'll return to Motril.

Please note:  You must be in good medical condition. Wear comfortable walking shoe as you will have to walk approximately 2 miles.

Motril, Alpujarra
Relax on a drive from Motril to the region of mountain villages known as Las Alpujarras (the Grasslands), where white-washed towns cling to the southern flanks of the Sierra Nevada, bisected by deep, sheltered valleys and gorges that run all the way down to the Mediterranean. The Alpujarra area is famous for its unique mini-ecosystem. Its terraced farmlands are constantly watered by the snowmelt from above, creating a high-altitude oasis of greenery dramatically contrasting with the arid foothills below. The cultural interest of the region lies in its 50-odd villages, which were the last stronghold of the Spanish Muslims, or Moors. You’ll stop for photos at Presa de Rules and pass through Orgiva before arriving at Pampaneira Village, which lies almost 5,000 feet above sea level. Pampaneira has retained its traditional Berber architecture—terraced clusters of grey-white box-shaped houses with flat clay roofs—a style that is still common in the Rif and Atlas mountains of Morocco. You will have the opportunity to have a pleasant tasting of local pastries in Ruta del Mulhacen. You’ll have an hour of free time to explore here, with or without your guide. Driving back through the village of Orgiva, you’ll have 45 minutes in Lanjarón before you head back to the port of Motril.

Please note: Wear comfortable walking shoes.

Motril, Flamenco & Granada
Watch a moving flamenco performance in Granada's old Arab quarter, and then enjoy free time in Granada exploring everything from little-known attractions to those as famous as the Alhambra. Depart from the pier and drive inland, for about an hour, past the majestic Sierra Nevada National Park and on to Granada, an Andalusian city that reveres flamenco. Upon your arrival in Sacromonte, one of the oldest neighborhoods, you'll be treated to a highly charged, passionate flamenco performance. Through dance, song, and guitar music, the seductive gypsy art of flamenco tells an emotional story with themes ranging from love to oppression. Its roots can be traced back more than 200 years, and nowhere is flamenco admired more than in Granada. Lunch will be served during the show. After this pure Andalusian experience, you'll transfer to the city center, where you're free to spend the afternoon doing whatever you wish. Tour the landmark Alhambra fortress-palace and its glorious Generalife Gardens (advance ticket purchase is highly recommended). Wander the labyrinthine streets and plazas in the historic Albaicin neighborhood, a World Heritage site where the Moors once resided. Behold the ornate cathedral and the Royal Chapel next door where the remains of Queen Isabella and her husband Ferdinand lie. Or simply spend your time browsing the shops for hand-painted ceramics, designer fashions and leather goods, all of which are extraordinary in Granada. After approximately 4.5 hours on your own, you'll rejoin your coach and escort at the appointed time and place and make the return journey back to Motril.

Please note:  Walking on this tour is mainly at your discretion during free time. The tour is not available to wheelchair guests due to the transportation used in Granada. Those with mobility concerns are cautioned to carefully evaluate their personal level of stamina and ability. Weather appropriate clothing; sun cap; sunglasses; and flat, comfortable walking shoes are recommended. Those wishing to visit religious sites should wear conservative clothing. The itinerary of the tour can be altered to avoid congestion.

Motril, Nazari Gardens & Winery Visit
This rare excursion is devoted to pleasing the senses, first by meandering through a colorful Muslim garden and then by tasting some exceptional vintages and local tapas at a traditional wine cellar. Departing from the pier, it's a scenic drive north through the fertile Valley of the Lecrin River. This area in the Granada province was once a Moorish stronghold and their influence is still felt more than 500 years later. In the beautiful village of Velez de Benaudalla, you'll spend a delightful hour exploring the treasured Nazari Gardens, one of the last remaining Muslim gardens in Southern Spain. Originally designed to stimulate the five senses, the lush gardens are immensely peaceful. Walking about the grounds, the flowers in full bloom and countless aromas wafting through the air, is often described as a spiritual experience. Be sure to stroll through the iconic stand of cypress trees, which are so tall they dwarf everything below. Continuing on, you'll drive to the esteemed Bodega Señorio de Nevada for a tour of the historic winery, which is located in a valley where the conquering Romans produced wine centuries ago. During the tasting of tapas and wine that follows your guided tour, you will likely sample vintages produced from Spain's native tempranillo grape. The grape tends to ripen early, a trait reflected in its name, which means "little early one." The resulting wines are usually spicy, aromatic and flavorful. Afterwards, you'll re-board your coach for the leisurely drive back to the pier.

Please note:  This tour includes approximately 2.5 hours of moderate walking/standing. The tour is not available to wheelchair guests and those with mobility concerns are cautioned to carefully evaluate their personal level of stamina and ability. Weather appropriate clothing; sun cap; sunglasses; and flat, comfortable walking shoes are recommended. Guests must be at least 21 years of age to participate in the wine tasting. Motril, The Sweet Gold with Workshop Piononos
Discover how profoundly sugar, known as the “sweet gold,” has influenced the history of Motril. You will visit a sugar museum, a former sugar factory. From the pier, it's a short transfer to the Museo Preindustrial del Azucar, better known as the Sugar Museum. Take a guided tour and learn how sugar has shaped the culture of Southern Spain. The region's microclimate is ideal for growing sugar cane, which over the centuries has brought great wealth to the Spaniards. It was such an important crop that Christopher Columbus carried sugar cane plants from Southern Spain to the New World on his second voyage. Later, sugar processed from as far away as Asia made its way to Motril, where it was then exported to the Americas. At the restaurant, you can enjoy a professional cooking demonstration, where you will see the typical Andalusian ‘piononos’ being prepared. A traditional Spanish dessert, these small pastries originated in the little town of Santa Fe, near Granada. A pionono consists of a thin layer of sponge rolled into a cylinder, flavored with different kinds of syrup to give it a sweet and pleasant taste, and covered with caramelized creme patissiere. It is normally eaten in one or two bites, and you will be able to enjoy these delicacies yourself before heading back to the ship.

Please note:  This tour involves walking a total distance of about 500 yards, with a few steps. Comfortable shoes are recommended.

Seville, Flamenco- An Evening at El Arenal
The flamenco is an escape valve, a lament. It is provocative, an example of distanced irony of derision, directed towards the objects of the performance. It makes fun of paradoxes and it is, above all sensuality. Art and passion in movement, the flamenco dance is a mixture of ancient forms of singing and dance dedicated to life and passionate love. Above all the flamenco is an expression of feeling: it doesn’t have language; it is a gesture, a touch, a look, a movement. Through the dance, the women transmit in their movements all the sincerity of the song, accentuating it with the rhythm of the palms or of a tap-dance. It encapsulates the beauty that arises from the cry of a free and innocent soul. Following the gypsy oral and spontaneous traditions the flamenco has no script. At thee tablao show, to feel the passion and energy so closely is an extraordinary experience. Visitors are connected with emotions that are universal but which are wrapped in a uniquely Spanish flavor.   Dancer and singer in each tablao tell a story and the movements, the song, the guitar music, the clapping and tapping all combine to produce deep emotional feelings that totally captive the spectator. Dinner is included.

Nearby, San Juan de Dios Square is protected by seawalls and features a unique marble fountain. But perhaps the Town Hall is the building that best reflects the grace and style of the city.
