The island of Vulcano, once calledHierò Thermessa is one of the most interesting in the Aeolian archipelagobecause of the exceptional nature of its landscapes and the variety of itslandscapes and the variety of its volcanic phenomena. Dedicated to Vulcan, theRoman god of fire and metal working; Homer described the island as the workshopof Hephaestus, the Greek god of fire. Your tour will begin with a boat trip around the island with a breathtaking view of the Faraglioni ,Grotta del Cavallo, and Vulcanello. Theonly landing place is the Porto di Levante. Vulcano consists of three oldcraters. The first, in the south between Monte Aria and Monte Saraceno, has been extinct for centuries; the GranCratere, on the other hand, is still active, the last eruption occurring in1890. Vulcanello, the third crater, is a promontory on the north eastern tip ofthe island created almost 2,000 years ago by an eruption. The climb up to themiddle crater is particularly interesting and you can reach the top in lessthan an hour.
