Portimao, Scenic Western Algarve
This tour will take you west along the coast, past fine golden sands, turquoise waters, ochre cliffs, and rocks sculpted into fantastic shapes. Before heading inland to Portimão, you will see a busy deep-water fishing port on the Arade River, where brightly colored boats float in the bay. Reminders of the past can be seen around every corner, including the site of Europe’s first slave market and the ornately gilded Chapel of St. Anthony, whose interior contains a magnificent set of Baroque carvings, Baroque glazed tiles, and several 18th century paintings.Continue to the wild headland of Cape St. Vincent, passing numerous small villages of white houses, sporting decorative chimney pots. The windblown Cape St Vincent, with its 200-foot-high cliffs facing the Atlantic, lies at the extreme southwest of Europe. Before returning to the ship, you will have a photo stop at Baleeira Viewpoint where there are excellent views of the Algarve Coastal areas and its beaches.

Malaga by Segway
Some things are just plain fun and riding a Segway around Spain definitely falls into that category. It takes a few minutes to get the hang of it; then you'll never want to get off! You'll begin your ride (after an introduction to the operation of the Segway) at Plaza de la Marina, in the center of Málaga. Continue to Larios Street, the main shopping avenue of the city, then on to Merced Square, at the end of Calle Alcazabilla, to see the obelisk erected as a tribute to General Torrijos, currently the headquarters of the Picasso Foundation. Next you will ride to the Santiago Church, built on the site of a former mosque and Málaga's oldest church (founded in 1490). You’ll also visit the Roman Theatre, discovered in 1951, which was built in the time of Caesar Augustus and used until the 3rd century A.D. After that time, it was used as a quarry by the Moors to restore the Alcazaba, which is the next stop on your tour. This impressive building, constructed mainly in the 11th century, was the palace/fortress of the ruling Muslims. Continuing on your tour, you’ll see the Catedral de la Encarnacion, Bishop Square, and the Paseo del Parque, before returning to Marina Square.

Almeria, Concierge Collection: Calar Alto Astronomical Observatory
The Astronomical Observatory of Calar Alto is the largest in continental Europe.  The team of Azimuth is formed by professional astrophysicists and astronomers and it is dedicated to carrying out - in tight collaboration with the Observatory of Calar Alto and other scientific institutions of international reference - science outreachs from the most iconic spaces related to astronomy, the astronomical observatories, from where every day knowledge of the Universe is expanded.  You will take a guided tour through the night sky so that you can see with your own eyes the always impressive planets of our solar system, the delicate planetary nebulae, the globular clusters with millions of stars in the shape of a bee-swarm or the light from other galaxies distant from us millions of light years.  Your visit will begin with an introductory talk on the premises of the observatory, to learn about the research in astrophysics done from Calar Alto, followed by  a  tour which will consist of an instructive lecture about the observatory, the scientific use of telescopes in astronomy, followed by the visit to the building of one of the telescopes. The telescope to visit depends on the availability due to scientific and maintenance tasks. And usually the first choice will be the 3.5-meter telescope. You will continue with a guided visit to “Las Menas” village, famous by the exploitation of mineral deposits, situated around where the Observatory is located. You will visit the interpretation center geo-mining and forest park.

Please note:  Bring your camera and wear comfortable walking shoes. Among with the rest of the team, someone like Javier Sánchez - Azimuth Projects Director - academically trained in astronomy and planetary sciences will accompany you on the guided tour .

Almeria, Granada & the Alhambra
Special shore excursion note: If you are interested in going to the Alhambra  we suggest you book your tour in advance by contacting a Windstar Vacation Planner at 800-258-7245. It is possible once you are on board that this tour will be full and Alhambra entrance tickets will no longer be available.

Discover the magnificent Moorish palace of the Alhambra – the dramatic highlight of historic Granada – on this unforgettable tour. A number of interesting sights will be visible from your coach along the 2½-hour drive each way, and your guide will introduce you to local traditions and history as you travel. The city of Granada is truly beautiful, and nothing in all of Spain compares to the wealth of architectural art to be found in the city’s Muslim-Hispanic complex – the 14th century Alhambra, where you will be met by another guide. This breathtaking example of Muslim architecture is surrounded by walls and towers and inside, palaces, military buildings, a fortress and an administrative center. Explore this remarkable structure, with its detailed mosaics, prism-style cupolas and stone-cast latticework offering a surprising grace and sophistication. Visit the inside of the Nasrid Palaces and the nearby Generalife Gardens surround this residence of kings and caliphs. An additional delight is the opportunity to experience a traditional Spanish-style lunch at Ruta Del Veleta restaurant.  Typical lunches are 1.5 hours long and include appetizers, salad, a main course, Spanish wine, and dessert.

Please note: It is a 2.5-hour motor coach drive each way to Granada.  This tour is not recommended for those with mobility issues and there will be walking up and down steps and over uneven, sometimes dirt, and cobblestone pathways.  Comfortable walking shoes are recommended. Due to the Alhambra’s popularity and their strict reservation policy it may be necessary to move the departure for this tour to the port of Malaga instead of the port of Almeria based on the number of maximum bookings granted. When this change becomes necessary bookings will be adjusted automatically, you will be notified and you will still go on this tour, but just out of Malaga. For a more in depth experience in the city of Granada and it’s Alhambra consider booking the Beyond Ordinary: Alhambra In Depth & Insider’s Granada Overnight Tour.

The residence became a Carthusian monastery in the Middle Ages and your guide will show you the chapel, a pharmacy, and the monks’ library. Valldemossa’s shining moment was in 1838, when George Sand and Frederic Chopin came to live at the monastery. Their stay here is well documented and a collection of their furniture remains. George Sand later wrote a book about their time here, entitled “A Winter in Majorca.” During free time, you will have the perfect opportunity to taste the typical sweets from Valldemosa called Coca de Patata, an individual sweet cake made with potatoes. The drive back to the ship will give you the opportunity to view the impressive cliffs to the north.

Please note: Comfortable shoes with rubber soles are recommended. Spanish law requires motor coach passengers to wear their seatbelts in vehicles that are so equipped. Please, note that this tour is not available on Sunday.

Mahon, Hiking in Menorca
Hiking is perhaps the perfect way to discover the beauty of the island of Menorca—a  UNESCO World Biosphere Reserve. With an intensely interesting history carved into the landscape throughout the ages, Menorca offers virtually endless possibilities for trekking and the characteristics of the landscape are so varied that every walker will find a route practically made to measure. The north coast offers some of the most stunning hiking trails on the island. You’ll take the route that connects Cala Pregonda with Cap de Cavalleria, heading first in the direction of Fornells and meeting the trailhead at the Caballería beaches. Your first stop will be at Cala Mica, where a narrow beach offers the first chance to enjoy the crystalline waters of Menorca. From there your walk continues to Binimel-là Beach. Here, fine and coarse sands are deposited together by the winter tramontana winds, but in summer the sea is very calm and the water clear and fresh. Another 90 minutes of walking brings you to Cala Pregonda’s coastal scenery of rocky outcroppings and picture postcard crescent of golden sand. There’s time to relax here and enjoy a swim before you return to the ship in Mahon.

Leaving Gythion, your tour will cross the Mani Peninsula to Dyros to visit the spectacular caves of Vlyhada and Alepotrypa, first opened to the public in 1963. You will ride for almost a mile through “caverns measureless to man.” Aided by electricity, the splendors of nature are on show. You will see formations that look like, and are named after, great sites such as the Metropolitan Throne, the Leaning Tower of Pisa and the Chinese Palace. At the bottom of one of the lakes of Vlyhada, often considered the most beautiful cave in the world, many interesting things have been discovered, such as fossils of hippopotami. After your cave visit you will drive to nearby Areopolis for a short stroll through the town, before returning to Gythion.

Please note:  Since the temperature in the caves is cooler you may want to bring a light jacket.

Gythion, Mystras Byzantine City
This tour by motorcoach will cross the plain of Laconia through its orange and olive groves, with the mighty Taygetus Mountain (7,897 ft.) in the background to arrive in Sparta, which today is a big, modern town. As the original Spartans cared little for buildings and lived a “Spartan” existence in barracks, their ancient architecture was simple and basic. Today, its scanty remains reflect little of Sparta’s ancient renown. Four miles west however, sits the medieval town of Mystras, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, with its churches and houses, monasteries and palaces lining the steep narrow streets. For 200 years, from the middle of the 13th century, this Byzantine town flourished. From the mid-15th century to the beginning of our century, the town was in constant decline, with the exception of a few years during which it was under Venetian control. However, the magnificence of the Byzantine architecture, remarkably preserved and sensitively restored, gives you the impression you are entering a whole different age.

Please note: The site is located on a very steep hill so flat rubber shoes are recommended.

Departing from the quayside, your motor coach will proceed along a picturesque and twisting road on a 45-minute drive where you can enjoy the relaxing views of the typical Greek countryside.  Standing impressively on the brow of a peaked hill facing south, the majestic Monastery of Ossios Loukas commands a spectacular view of the adjacent valley. In some ways surpassing the famous Byzantine Church at Daphne, the monastery forms one of the most impressive memorials to the artistic vitality of the empire, during the revival of prosperity under the Macedonian Dynasty (865 – 1059). The monastery bears the name of a local hermit, the Blessed Loukas (Ossios Loukas) of Stiri, who was famed for his austerity, the dignity of his life, his prophecies and the miraculous cures he performed. Departing the monastery your tour will return to the port via the town of Arachova, famous for its handmade woolen carpets. Itea, Mythology of Delphi
In antiquity Delphi was one of the world's most important religious centers. The Sanctuary of Apollo attracted a host of pilgrims who came to consult the oracle. Even now an aura of mystery surrounds the ruins of Delphi,a UNESCO World Heritage Site, exposed on a rocky slope. For sheer grandeur of natural beauty combined with ancient ruins, there is probably no other spot on earth that rivals Delphi. Visit the ancient Sanctuary of Apollo, where the celebrated oracle Pythia dwelt. Her ambiguous prophecies were known and respected all over the ancient world. Visit the Temple of Apollo, the Sacred Way, the amphitheater, the best preserved stadium of Greece, and the Castalian spring, where in ancient days the pilgrims had to wash before they were allowed to consult the oracle. In the Delphi museum, see such treasures as the Omphalos, which marked the center of the world, and the magnificent bronze Charioteer, one of the finest pieces surviving from the 5th century BC.

At ancient Olympia, 25 miles east of the small fishing village of Katákolon, you will step back 2,000 years into the past, to the days of the original Olympic games. Meet your professional guide and set off to visit the ruined city of ancient Ephesus, a UNESCO World Heritage Site founded by the Carians and Lelegs. Today, this is one of the most magnificent and best-preserved archaeological sites in the world. You will see the glorious Celsus Library façade, restored and reconstructed in the 1970s, the Temple of Hadrian, and the Great Theatre with a seating capacity of 25,000 people. Then, you will visit a new ongoing excavation site of the Church of Mary inside Ephesus. The church is located in the south stoa of the Olympian next to the harbor of Ephesus. You will also visit the Ephesus Archaeological Museum. Istanbul, Whirling Dervish Show
A short drive through the electric and atmospheric Istanbul city by night will whisk you to the Galata Mevlevihanesi for a Private Whirling Dervish Show (The Sema Ritual).  The son of Mevlana, Sultan Veled, and his associates considered the day of death a day of celebration and founded the Mevlevi Order on the thoughts of Mevlana. The Mevlevi Ritual has been performed in Mevlevi Temples (or lodges) for hundreds of years. The whirling dance, which is performed by Semazens, is proverbially associated with dervishes, the practice of the Mevlevi order in Turkey, and is part of a formal ceremony known as Sema, a means for man to reach actual existence. The Mevlevi ritual symbolizes the mystical meaning of divine love, passion and spiritual maturity. The ritual whirling of the Semazens is an act of love and a drama of faith.

Istanbul, Turkish Bath Experience
Your scenic drive will take you through the old town to reach your destination of relaxation, Ayasofya Hurrem Sultan Turkish bath. It was built by Mimar Sinan by order of Hurrem Sultan, wife of Suleyman the Magnificent, near Hagia Sophia in the 16th century (1556 – 1557). The building is in the shape of a classical period Ottoman bath and is a type of double bath. Women and men sections were built on the same axis in this bath for the first time, which was a new idea in Turkish bath architecture. You’ll be welcomed in the Hammam Square and directed to the changing room and provided with takunya (wooden sabots) and pestemal (loincloth). Myrina, Highlights of Limnos
This tour will commence with a drive to the East coast of Lemnos where the island’s most important archaeological site of Poliochni lies. Here the Italian Archaeologists discovered back in 1930 seven different layers of civilization, one on the top of the other. Poliochni is considered one of the largest urban centers of the Early Bronze Age and the first city in Europe with a basic social and civic structure. The Neolithic town predates the Egyptian dynasties, the Minoan Kingdoms of Crete, and even the earliest level of Troy. Following your visit to Poliochni board your coach and head for Moudros, the second biggest town of the island and the first capital of Lemnos. There you will have some free time for a stroll along its seafront or to enjoy a coffee in one of the cafés. You will continue to the Allied Cemetery in Moudros. It is one of the two most important monuments the island has, of the Allied Expedition versus Gallipoli. Many victims of the 1st World War were buried here in clusters depending upon their nationality. From there you will return to Myrina and visit The Archaeological Museum of Lemnos, founded in 1961. In the museum you will see exhibits from excavations of the Italian Archaeological School in the ancient sites of Poliochni, Kavirio, Ifestia, and other spots all over the island. Also you will be acquainted with various historical periods of Lemnos (prehistoric, Age of Copper, Classical period).  From the museum you will return to the port.

Please note: Due to some walking on uneven surface in Poliochni, it is advisable to wear non-slip, comfortable shoes.
