The Genoese needed a city and port which could ensure contact between their “homeland” and their “colony.” Even if this small port was swept by terrible  winds, it was protected by a rock, easily defensible, and upon which a dungeon (or bastiglia) was built- and hence the name of the town Bastua. Bastia, Corsican Tales And Legends
Bastia was founded by the Genoese in 1380, when they were looking for a naturally sheltered port to replace the ancient Roman city of Mariana and Biguglia (which had been destroyed by the Corsicans in 1372).  They needed a city and port which could assure the contact between their “Homeland” and their “colony”. Even if this small port was swept by terrible winds, it was protected by a rock,  easily defensible, and upon which a dungeon (or bastiglia) was built- and hence the name of the town Bastia. The numerous religious buildings dotted all over the island bear witness to the profound religious fervor of its inhabitants and their attachment to the Catholic faith. Despite this, the collective consciousness remains steeped in many pagan traditions, with relics of ancient beliefs. The mystical spirit of Corsica finds its true expression during the great Christian festivals, however the barrier between the natural and supernatural world is extremely permeable and Corsica is teeming with visionaries, faith healers, and mediums. This walking tour will take you to some purportedly haunted sites, and give you an overview of the superstitions and local legends which still hold sway.

Calvi, Pigna & Wine Appreciation At Clos Culombu
On the heights of the inner Balagne  lies the small village of Pigna. This town in Corsica is a beautiful village charm, true haunt of artists and artisans who made it famous. The village is attractive with its beautiful flowered streets and its main square. It is one of the finest examples of the architecture of this region of flourishing medieval villages set on rocky spurs. After your Pigna visit you will drive to Domaine Culombu. Corsica produces several very good wines, which are hardly known outside the island and visiting a vineyard for an afternoon is a pleasant experience. Today the domaine, in conversion to the mode of organic farming, produces vines nielluccio, sciaccarello, vermentino, grenache and cinsault. The domaine is mainly recognized for the elaboration of its white wines and its rosés; stemming from first juices, in the very pale grey, the specialty of Calvi. Here you will enjoy a wine tasting of 3 wines with snacks and will be offered a bottle ow wine as well.

Please note: In the summer months, heavy traffic can be expected in the popular town of Pigna, which may cause delays. The coach is unable to drive into the center of San Antonino and will park below the village; care should be taken walking into the village as the steps up are steep and uneven. Calvi, Saint Florent
Discover northern Corsica, from Calvi to Lozari. You will skirt the popular summer resorts of St. Ambroggio or Algajola and marvel at the breathtaking view over the glistening blue sea and white sandy beaches. Pass the little town of Ile Rousse (Red Island), which takes its name from the red granite peninsula at the end of the bay before the road turns inland towards the Désert des Agriates. Despite its name, this was once a very fertile region. In fact, agriates means cultivated fields, and the desert was considered the Garden of Corsica thanks to its orchards with various fruit trees, olive trees, wheat and vineyards. However, during the 18th  and 19th  centuries, fires and soil erosion reduced the region to a desert and the land was almost abandoned. Today the Desert des Agriates is a protected wildlife reserve. You will finally reach Saint Florent  - beloved by the rich and famous and yet somehow retaining its small fishing-port personality with pretty, narrow streets and little boutiques. Your guide will set you free for a stroll on your own or a drink along the marina. Those in search of a good walk can hike to the circular Genoese citadel built in 1439. It completely dominates the town and offers a wonderful 360° view. The St. Maria Assunta Cathedral is located a half-mile from the town center and is worth a visit for its fine Pisan-Romanesque architecture.

Barcelona Montserrat with Transfer to Airport
Your tour departs from the port for the 1-hour drive to reach Montserrat, a peculiar rocky mountain range which is the site of the monastery where people come to worship “La Moreneta,” the black Madonna who is the patron-virgin of Catalonia.  The Benedictine Monastery of Montserrat was founded in the 11th century and is located in a natural park 37 miles west of Barcelona. Besides visiting the Benedictine Abbey Monastery, you will admire also the Patron of Catalonia, Saint Mary of Montserrat that is worshiped at the shrine in the Monastery. The Benedictine community, now numbering some 80 monks, has served the shrine for almost 1,000 years. They are dedicated to a life of prayer, to working and to welcoming pilgrims, making the site a place for dialogue, prayer and culture. In addition to the monks, the escolans also live in Montserrat. They form the oldest boys choir in Europe ( and might be available during the visit). You will be given a tour of the monastery, and have some free time before taking the coach to the airport.

Please note:  Comfortable shoes, water, a light jacket and a hat are recommended. There are downhill and uneven paths, plus cobblestones to walk over. There may be long lines to view the Black Virgin up close.  This excursion may operate in reverse. Access to the Basilica might be denied if mass is taking place. Shoulders and knees must be covered to enter monastery.  This tour will end at the airport and is available only to guests whose flights leave at 3:00 p.m. or later.

A number of interesting sights will be visible from your coach along the 2½-hour drive each way, and your guide will introduce you to local traditions and history as you travel. The city of Granada is truly beautiful, and nothing in all of Spain compares to the wealth of architectural art to be found in the city’s Muslim-Hispanic complex – the 14th century Alhambra, where you will be met by another guide. This breathtaking example of Muslim architecture is surrounded by walls and towers and inside, palaces, military buildings, a fortress and an administrative center. Explore this remarkable structure, with its detailed mosaics, prism-style cupolas and stone-cast latticework offering a surprising grace and sophistication. The nearby Generalife Gardens surround this residence of kings and caliphs. An additional delight is the opportunity to experience a traditional Spanish-style lunch at Ruta Del Veleta restaurant.  Typical lunches are 1.5 hours long and include appetizers, salad, a main course, Spanish wine, and dessert.

Please note: It is a 2.5-hour motor coach drive each way to Granada.  This tour is not recommended for those with mobility issues and there will be walking steps and over uneven, sometimes dirt, and cobblestone pathways.  Comfortable walking shoes are recommended.

Malaga & Picasso
Those of you who delight in ancient history and art lovers cannot miss this tour! With half a million inhabitants, Málaga is located in the center of the Costa del Sol. From the outside you will admire the beautiful architecture of the Alcazaba Fortress, a historic castle built in the 11th century to be the residence of the Arabian Caliphs or Kings. It is connected by a step path to Gibralfaro Castle, an ancient Moorish fortress with breathtaking views of the city and its bay. Buses will take you to the castle so you won’t have to walk up the hill. The Museo Picasso Málaga is run by the Fundación Museo Picasso de Málaga and the Fundación Paul, Christine y Bernard Ruiz-Picasso. The Fundación Paul, Christine y Bernard Ruiz-Picasso is the rightful owner of the collection there, whereas the Fundación Museo Picasso de Málaga owns the group of buildings that holds it. As was initially agreed by the donors, the two foundations are responsible for the conservation, exhibition, study and diffusion of the collection. At the museum, you will be able to appreciate all Picasso styles and techniques (Painting, drawing, sculpture, ceramic and graphic works in an exhibition with 155 works ranging from 1890 up to 1973).

Malaga by Segway
Some things are just plain fun and riding a Segway around Spain definitely falls into that category. It takes a few minutes to get the hang of it; then you'll never want to get off! You'll begin your ride (after an introduction to the operation of the Segway) at Plaza de la Marina, in the center of Málaga. Continue to Larios Street, the main shopping avenue of the city, then on to Merced Square, at the end of Calle Alcazabilla, to see the obelisk erected as a tribute to General Torrijos, currently the headquarters of the Picasso Foundation. Next you will ride to the Santiago Church, built on the site of a former mosque and Málaga's oldest church (founded in 1490). You’ll also visit the Roman Theatre, discovered in 1951, which was built in the time of Caesar Augustus and used until the 3rd century A.D. After that time, it was used as a quarry by the Moors to restore the Alcazaba, which is the next stop on your tour. This impressive building, constructed mainly in the 11th century, was the palace/fortress of the ruling Muslims. Continuing on your tour, you’ll see the Catedral de la Encarnacion, Bishop Square, and the Paseo del Parque, before returning to Marina Square.

Please note:  This tour is not possible for people confined to wheelchairs.  The minimum age to participate is 10 and participants must weigh between 66 and 265 pounds. Helmets will be provided. Participants must sign a waiver to go on this excursion.

Tangier: Cooking Class at the Blue Door
Moroccan cuisine is considered one of the most important cuisines in the world. The cuisine of the first inhabitants, the Berbers, still exists today in the staple dishes like tagine and couscous.  The Arab invasion brought new spices, nuts and dried fruits, and the sweet and sour combinations that we see in dishes like tagine with dates and lamb. The Moors introduced olives, olive juice and citrus while the Jewish-Moors left behind their sophisticated preserving techniques that we see in the frequent use of preserved lemons, pickles, etc.  The Ottoman Empire introduced barbecue (kebabs) to Moroccan cuisine. The French colony, although short-lived left behind a culture of cafes, pastries, and even wine.
Over time, cooks in the kitchens of the five royal cities (Fez, Marrakesh, Meknes, Tangier and Rabat) have developed and perfected the dishes that blend each of these distinct tastes. Every Moroccan dish has its place in society and varies with the market, the season, and the region. Your first stop will be the Grand Socco, home to a cavalcade of color, charm, street musicians, a fish market, scenic handicrafts, and spices. You will then proceed to Blue Door Hotel Cooking Classroom, where you will be welcomed with Moroccan tea followed by a cooking lesson of a very traditional Moroccan dish,  learn how to make the traditional Moroccan bread and take it to a local oven. In the meantime, while waiting for the bread, you will learn how to make and serve a real Moroccan tea. Once food is ready, enjoy lunch and this authentic experience. Depart for your ship  with the knowledge needed to impress at your next dinner party.

Please note: Wear comfortable, flat  walking shoes. Bring sunglasses, sunscreen, hat, local currency.

Walk inside the Kasbah and then you  will head uphill to an area barely changed since Roman times. Tangier: Tetouan UNESCO World Heritage
Tetouan is a Berber name which literally interpreted means "the eyes" and figuratively "the water springs."  The town features a fort, squares, mosques, fountains, taverns, and one of the Kings palaces. You will depart by motor coach on a guided orientation drive through the city of Tangier en-route to Tetouan, an hour away. You will start your tour at the old Royal Palace, a 17th century building which is itself a reflection of the Hispano-Moresque architecture. The palace is closed to public entry but its main ornate gate Bab Er-Rouah can give you a mental idea of what is beyond.  Hassan II Square is situated where the historic and modern parts of the city converge to create the heart of the town. You will join a guided walk through the Medina which is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. This traditional walled souk features many typical architectural traits related to its history and also a multitude of different artisans carrying out their trades.  You will also have the opportunity to visit the Bab Akla School of Traditional Arts and Crafts. Tetouan’s famous School of Plastic Arts, the first of its kind in Morocco, has produced some of Morocco’s best painters over the past half century, and keeps alive these traditional art forms in the modern world. The scholars of the school are all children who come from disadvantaged backgrounds and the skills they learn give them a chance of success for their future. Your entrance fees go directly to maintaining this wonderful initiative.  Enjoy refreshments at a local Moroccan restaurant, located in the heart of Tetouan. If time permits, you will be given free time before returning to the ship.
