Built in 1866 by the French for King Norodom, the palace is home to the Silver Pagoda, famous for its floor made of 5,329 silver tiles. The palace has been home to the Cambodian royal family except during the Khmer Rouge regime in 1975. Some buildings are open for exploration, while others can only be viewed from the outside. Next, learn about Cambodia's religious history at Wat Phnom Penh Temple and take an orientation tour around the Independence Monument. To understand more of Phnom Penh's more recent and darker history, visit the former school that was turned into the S-21 detention and torture center during the Khmer Rouge era. Now home to the Tuol Sleng Genocide Museum, you'll hear harrowing stories of survival through an audio guide as you explore the museum. Continue your journey to the Killing Fields of Choeung Ek, where a memorial park has been created around the mass graves of the victims of the Khmer Rouge regime.
