With 3,000 years of history, you can't turn around in Athens without encountering the past. The Acropolis, a UNESCO site, the Plaka, and the Acropolis Museum are must-sees. But leave time if you can to climb Pnyx Hill for photos of the Parthenon at sunset, to buy your own set of Greek komboloi (worry beads), and to explore the metro stations that serve as mini-museums for the relics that are constantly being unearthed.
This Gibraltar-like town tied to the mainland by a single thread of causeway holds treasures that are old even by Mediterranean standards, with town walls and several churches dating to the 12th century. Climb to the upper town for an up-close look at the castle and Agia Sophia, a Byzantine church. Your tour will commence with a walk through the narrow streets within the castle walls, so tiny that in many places only two people can walk side by side. You will see the ruins of houses and Byzantine churches - most in ruins with the fortunate exception of the Church of Christ Elkomenos . This cathedral dates back to the 13th century, but features alterations made during the Venetian occupation of Monemvasia. Four surviving ancient Byzantine icons are on display. Please note: Wear comfortable walking shoes, sunglasses, and sunscreen. Bring a hat. Guests must be physically fit. Minivans will operate as shuttles from the tender to the gate of the Old Town as larger coaches are not permitted on the road to the Old Town.

While strolling along these narrow lanes you will see ruined houses and Byzantine churches and Church of Christ Elkomenos. This cathedral dates back to the 13th century, but features alterations made during the Venetian occupation of Monemvasia. Then you will visit " Liotrivi"(Olive Oil Factory ), a fully restored historic mansion that previously was the home of the family Ritsos, where the world-renowned poet lived during his childhood. You will have a guided tour in the old olive mill and learn the traditional method of producing extra virgin olive oil. You will walk to the vineyards and the olive groves. In a patio area, an experienced cook will knead and bake traditional bread in a wood-oven. The bread made, along with other local products, will be served to you in an appetizer buffet under the olive trees where you will have the opportunity to also taste the famous wines of Monemvasia. This tour by motorcoach will cross the plain of Laconia through its orange and olive groves, with the mighty Taygetus Mountain (7,897 ft.) in the background to arrive in Sparta , which today is a big, modern town. As the original Spartans cared little for buildings and lived a "Spartan" existence in barracks, their ancient architecture was simple and basic. Today, its scanty remains reflect little of Sparta's ancient renown. Four miles west however, sits the medieval town of Mystras, a UNESCO World Heritage Site , with its churches and houses, monasteries and palaces lining the steep narrow streets. For 200 years, from the middle of the 13th century, this Byzantine town flourished. From the mid-15th century to the beginning of our century, the town was in constant decline, with the exception of a few years during which it was under Venetian control. However, the magnificence of the Byzantine architecture , remarkably preserved and sensitively restored, gives you the impression you are entering a whole different age. Please note: The site is located on a very steep hill so flat rubber shoes are recommended.

Leaving Gythion, your tour will cross the Mani Peninsula to Dyros to visit the spectacular caves of Vlyhada and Alepotrypa , first opened to the public in 1963. You will ride for almost a mile through "caverns measureless to man." Aided by electricity, the splendors of nature are on show. You will see formations that look like, and are named after, great sites such as the Metropolitan Throne, the Leaning Tower of Pisa and the Chinese Palace. At the bottom of one of the lakes of Vlyhada, often considered the most beautiful cave in the world, many interesting things have been discovered, such as fossils of hippopotami. After your cave visit you will drive to nearby Areopolis for a short stroll through the town, before returning to Gythion. Please note : Since the temperature in the caves is cooler you may want to bring a light jacket.

Before heading to the ruins of ancient Mystras, a UNESCO World Heritage Site you will stop at the roadside monument to the memory of Loenidas. You will have an in-depth guided tour of Mystras followed by time on your own to wander through the narrow streets of this medieval city. Your next stop will be at the Olive Oil Museum of Sparta . Unique in Greece, it is located in one of the main olive producing regions. The museum houses a variety of olive oil presses and other equipment. You will be served olive pate, olives, rusks, local cheese, cucumber and tomatoes along with tsipouro, ouzo, and mineral water before your return trip to Gythion. Please note : Mystras is not wheelchair accessible and steps are involved. It is not possible to stay on the motor coach during that portion of the tour.

You'll also step inside Messina's famous cathedral, almost entirely rebuilt after the earthquake of 1908. It features an interesting finely carved 15 th to 16 th century central doorway. The stately bell tower, 100 feet tall, holds the largest astronomical clock in the world. Its animated, mechanical statues are only seen at noon. And don't miss the Orion Fountain in Cathedral Square, adjacent to the duomo. Built in 1547, its polygonal basin portrays Orion - one of the legendary founders of Messina. Mt. Etna, a very active volcano, is the largest volcano in Europe at 10,723 feet and has erupted 130 times. Of great interest is the variety of landscapes and vegetation that can be found on the volcano's slopes. Your drive to Mt. Etna is along a coastal highway and through a fertile paradise of green vineyards and golden citrus groves, passing through villages such as Santa Venerina and Zafferana Etnea. The scenery becomes more forbidding as you approach the Sapienza Refuge. You will see the city of Catania, overwhelmed by an eruption 300 years ago, and walk around Crateri Silvestri inspecting the lava flow from the eruption of 1983. These small craters are set amid bare fields of grey lava that stretch for miles. You will have free time to explore on your own and light refreshments before driving back to the pier. The city of Herculaneum, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, was founded around the 4th century B.C., copying the geometric regularity of the layout of Naples. Its "decumani" (main streets) have an east-west orientation, while the "cardines" (narrower streets) run north-south. There is undeniably a "feeling" about Herculaneum, quite different from Pompeii, where you get the impression that its ancient population of 5,000 packed up and left only moments ago. Herculaneum was smaller than Pompeii but is better preserved simply because, while hot ashes consumed the wood of Pompeii's buildings, Herculaneum was covered by hot mud which sealed and protected entire city blocks. This means that marble floors, mosaics, paintings and carbonized woods can still be admired today. You will discover the ancient luxurious properties and villas including the House of the Mosaic , the House of Deer , the Thermae (baths) and the House of Carbonized Furniture . On the lovely island of Elba, visit the country residence of Napoleon who spent nine months on the island. Depending on the day of the week, the tour will visit either Napoleon's in-town residence of Villa dei Mulini, or his country residence of Villa San Martino. At Villa San Martino, highlights include Room of the Doves, with a painting on the ceiling of two doves bound by the same ribbon and a knot that tightens as they fly further away from each other. The Egyptian Room has a circular ring of Zodiac signs painted on the ceiling. You can also view Napoleon's bedroom, dressing room, study and stroll through the nicely manicured gardens. Napoleon's town residence, Villa dei Mulini includes the study, reception hall, Napoleon's bedroom and his library. You will make a stop in Porto Azzuro summer resort area with a short time to explore. The coach can get very warm. Please bring extra water to beat the heat and dress in layers for the unpredictable summer rainstorm. Return to the ship in time for lunch on board, or stroll around the corner to the Old Port of Portoferraio for a typical Italian meal. Please Note: Comfortable walking shoes are recommended. The drive cuts through the center of the island continuing along the coast to reach the upscale resort town of Marciana Marina and then into the hills to reach the cable car station. Meanwhile, enjoy the beautiful scenery down to the coastline and the surrounding hilltop villages. During the drive you'll learn about the history of the island, the culture and the local nature. Upon arrival at the station, you will have a brief safety briefing and then board your basket (2 people per basket) for the top. The ride to the top takes 20 min, and the views on the way up are unforgettable. You will want to have your camera ready! At the top, you can see the Tuscany archipelago and relax with a coffee on the panoramic terrace. On the return to the pier, your tour continues to Marciana Marina. Your journey from Bastia will lead inland to Oletta - a small village terraced up the hillside, and from where there is a lovely view of Saint Florent and over the countryside of olive groves, vineyards, and pastures - small squares of property delimited by dry stone walls. Then the road climbs up to the San Stefano Pass, through chestnut and olive groves, and from there is a spectacular panorama down to the east coast and the Biguglia "étang" (pool) and in the other direction, across the Agriates Desert and the sea at Saint Florent. You will climb a sinuous, narrow road, up to the Teghime Pass, where at an altitude of 1,759 feet ( 536M), the views are completely different in each direction . To the West: over extensive vineyards right to the gulf of Saint Florent. To the South: across mountains and valleys towards the chestnut forests of the Castagniccia. The East: past Bastia and the sea leading to Italy. Finally North: the mountainous backbone of the Cap Corse. The road turns and twists its way down to Patrimonio, offering picturesque views background. Patrimonio village is dominated by its church and high steeple (built in 1749). You will travel through Sa Roca's Wood , a beautiful big woods from where it's possible to enjoy an amazing view. You will see Santa Teresa's private farm , a typical Menorca farm where you will stop and have a snack of typical local products (cheese, ham, wine, fruit and vegetables) and have a rest. Then you will head to Cavalleria's Lighthouse situated at the very north point of the island.The view is amazing and it's possible, as well to visit a little cave from where the view is even more interesting and spectacular. Next stop will be the red sands of Cavalleria's Beach . You will spend a hour here to have a relaxing and refreshing moment before going back to the hotel. Please note : This is an adventure tour and the itinerary is mostly off-road. A good amount of bends, hairpin curves, off-road trails are planned in the route, and for this reason it's not suitable for pregnant women as well as guests with reduced mobility or back issues. Depart the pier for the approximately 20-minute drive through the fertile north countryside to the fishing village of Fornells a picturesque fishing village, set on a magnificent bay of the same name. An important harbor in days gone by for ships to take shelter from the strong north winds, today this village is now a pleasure ground for watersports which include windsurfing, kayaking and sailing. Fornells is also very well known locally for its fish restaurants and the King of Spain is among the many famous people who come here to eat the Menorcan Caldereta, a dish based on local lobster. Your tour will continue to the largest sandy beach on the island, Son Bou Beach which backs onto the open countryside and is relatively undisturbed in terms of modern development. However, there are still some hotels, holiday complexes, a few shops, bars, restaurants, and a discotheque nearby. Upon arrival, a brief photo stop will be made at this scenic locale. Return to Mahon where you will leave the coach at the main square and walk downhill back to the harbor through the center of town. The walk through this attractive town gives one a glimpse of the different phases in the island's turbulent history, and the many architectural styles reflecting the frequent changes of rule. The center offers an interesting mix of narrow streets lines with whitewashed houses, wide open squares and grand historical buildings. Please note : This tour requires a moderate amount of walking and is not suitable for guests with limited mobility or guests who utilize a wheelchair. Distance covered is approximately half a mile (1km) on mainly flat areas with some uneven surfaces, gravel and cobblestones. There is a slight incline in Fornells from parking area to village. The Port of Mahon is the biggest natural port in the world (only after Pearl Harborr) and the most secure natural port of the Balearic Islands. Fornells, situated at the mouth of a long bay, is a charming fishing village where the natural beauty of this bay is underlined by the sober architecture of the white houses with green window shutters. Upon arrival in Fornells, you will have some free time for photo taking before heading to Monte Toro , the highest mountain of the island (1,171 feet) where you will admire both magnificent sights of the island and will also have the chance to visit the small chapel dedicated to the "Monte Toro" Virgin. Leaving Monte Toro, you will continue to Sant Patrici, a charming little town famous both for its beautiful views and the locally produced cheese (a strong tasting variety, mahonés, that delights people from all over the world). You will have a chance to taste the products. You will visit the Museum of Menorca dating from 1889. The actual building is a Franciscan Convent from the 15th century with a beautiful courtyard. The museum gives an overview of Menorca's interesting history. Time permitting you will be offered the possibility of tasting another great local product - free of charge -, the alcoholic drink known as Gin Xoriguer, the Mahon brewed, version of the "conventional" Gin. This is often tasted with lemonade in a cocktail known as "pomade" and is very commonly drunk by locals. The possibility of a guided walk around town will also be available upon arrival, or you can return to the ship comfortably in a coach. Mahon, Ancient Sites - A UNESCO Partner Tour *
This tour will offer the opportunity to visit several archaeological sites of the Talayotic culture of Menorca , a candidate to be declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO in 2021. In addition, Menorca has already been declared a Biosphere Reserve back in 1993 by UNESCO. The chosen archaeological sites are set in very well preserved rural and natural environments , currently managed as farms. The first visit will be in the prehistoric village of Cornia Nou, located near Mahón city. Different talayots -like towers- and temples were built on a little hill. You will have the opportunity to see several monuments ranging from the Bronze Age to the Romanization of the island. You will make a stop in a local cafeteria to have a snack. Then, visit the site of Rafal Rubí (Alaior), an emblematic bronze age funerary monument, unique of the island of Menorca. You will see the funerary chambers and the funerary rites will be explained by an archaeologist. Visit the taula temple enclosure of Trepucó (Mahón). Here you can see the talayot, like a big tower built with large cyclopean stones, and behind it, you will admire a large taula and a beautiful sanctuary surrounded by a 18th century defensive wall, made by the Spanish army when Saint Philips Castle was besieged by the Spanish troops in the year 1782, when the island was under British goverment. The prehistoric wall that is surrounding the village was remodeled and improved, following canons of the influence Carthaginian fortification. Also, a magnificent talayot -a big prehistoric tower- can be seen at this site which stands out as having one of the most spectacular taula sanctuary enclosures. Please note: Wear comfortable walking shoes and bring your camera.
Mallorca is steep, green, and fringed with enticing coves and more than 200 lush beaches. But all that natural beauty is just the beginning. Stroll along the tree-shaded Paseo de Born in search of tapas. Shop for a Siurell; a traditional red, green, and white clay whistle dating back to the time of the Moors. Watch the street performers on the piazza around the church, or cross the island to beautiful Sóller. Not to be missed is the cultural landscape of the Serra de Tramuntana, a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

One of the best ways to experience some of Mallorca's dramatic scenery is this train ride across the island that allows you to see the rugged interior. From the port, a short motor coach ride will take you to the train station. You will board the old fashioned electric train for Soller. Learn all about this old fashioned electric train that has preserved its traditional character for almost 100 years. You will be passing almond and locust-bean trees, groves of olive trees and the lush and pine covered mountains. Arrive in Soller and take a walking tour around this charming village before returning to your yacht. Please note : Train ride will be one way and could be either going to Soller or coming back, depending on train schedules. The other way will be by motor coach. You should always take your ID and bring a camera, sun protection and sunglasses.

Palma is the capital of the Balearic Islands and lies on the southeastern coast of Mallorca Island. A wealth of architectural highlights awaits you. Board your coach and travel to your first stop at the circle-shaped 14th century Bellver Castle , one of the world's very few rounded castles and the only one of its type in Europe. Built in military-influenced Gothic style, it lies atop a hill affording expansive panoramic views over the city and surrounding countryside. You will travel on to the handsome 13th century La Seu Cathedral , which presides over the city and is one of Europe's finest examples of pure ecclesiastic Gothic architecture. After exploring the Cathedral's interior you will view the exterior of the adjacent Almudaina Palace . This austere palace was originally an Arab fortress and later the palace of Majorcan kings. Before returning to the yacht you will stop to see the unique style and architectural engineering of the city's famous bullring . Please note : Comfortable shoes with rubber soles are recommended. There are approximately 100 steps from the coach parking area to the La Seu Cathedral. Spanish law requires that motor coach guest's wear their seat belts at all times while in vehicles that are so equipped. On Sundays and holidays the Cathedral is not open to visitors. The history of the Cathedral will be given outside. When visiting the Cathedral, knees and shoulders must be covered. Bellver Castle is closed on Mondays and the visit will be from the outside only with extra time for shopping.

Enjoy a drink and an aperitif at the gardens of the remains of the 11 th century Arab baths before walking back to the bus to return to the yacht. A short motor coach drive past olive trees and local vegetation brings you to the quaint 14th century village of Valldemossa, located at the foot of the Northern Mountain Range. Its former royal residence, La Cartuja , is the first stop on your tour. The residence became a Carthusian monastery in the Middle Ages and your guide will show you the chapel, a pharmacy, and the monks' library. Valldemossa's shining moment was in 1838, when George Sand and Frederic Chopin came to live at the monastery. Their stay here is well documented and a collection of their furniture remains. George Sand later wrote a book about their time here, entitled "A Winter in Majorca." You will have an opportunity to taste the typical sweets from Valldemosa called Coca de Patata, an individual sweet cake made with potatoes. The drive back to the ship will give you the opportunity to view the impressive cliffs to the north. Please note : Comfortable shoes with rubber soles are recommended. Spanish law requires motor coach passengers to wear their seatbelts in vehicles that are so equipped. Please, note that this tour is not available on Sunday.

Your tour will depart for the 75-minute drive to the town of Porto Cristo, one of the oldest anchorages of the island. This fishing village is located at the end of a sheltered bay which developed in the Middle Ages to cater for Manacor. On the outskirts of the town is where you will find the famous Caves del Drach are located. The Caves of Drach are the most popular caves with tourists. There are three main caves, Cueva Negra (Black Cave), Cueva Blanca (White Cave) and Cueva Luis Salvator, at the end of which is a place called La Ventana (the window). Through La Ventana there is a huge lake, now known as Lago Martel (Lake Martel), behind which is the latest discovery of the caves, now known as Cueva de los Franceses (Cave of the French). Enjoy a row boat ride across Lake Martel, one of the world's largest underground lakes accompanied by live classical music. The beauty of the caves can be appreciated thanks to its exceptional lighting. You will stop in Porto Cristo, with a short amount of time to browse at the pearl factory .
