With 3,000 years of history, you can't turn around in Athens without encountering the past. The Acropolis, a UNESCO site, the Plaka, and the Acropolis Museum are must-sees. But leave time if you can to climb Pnyx Hill for photos of the Parthenon at sunset, to buy your own set of Greek komboloi (worry beads), and to explore the metro stations that serve as mini-museums for the relics that are constantly being unearthed.

You'll want to be on deck today as we transit the narrow Corinth Canal with other private yachts and Greek mail steamers. It's a shortcut reserved for petite ships like ours, and as we cruise between the narrow limestone walls we are the envy of all the ancient Romans who once portaged their ships along this very route before there was a canal. Canal transit time and duration is subject to change based on traffic and canal authorities.

Fiskardo, Melissani Lake & Ouzo Tasting *

Fiskardo, Melissani Lake & Ouzo Tasting *
The varied landscapes of Kephalonia seem like they have been created by the hands of a dreaming god. The coastline is like a lace of sheer cliffs plunging into a turquoise sea and gentle pebbly and sandy beaches. The hinterland is a mosaic of densely forested mountains and well cultivated hills and valleys. Small villages and towns emerge from the pines and the cypress trees, topped by Venetian castles and chapels. You will drive to the village of Karavomylos where the mysterious, 40,000-year-old, underground Melissani Lake is located. During the 1953 earthquake, the cave's roof collapsed, creating amazing light displays on the cave walls. Legend says the lake is named for the nymph Melissanthe, who fell in love with Pan and drowned in the lake when he rejected her. A small boat will be waiting to take you on a breathtaking trip across its mysteriously salty, subterranean water. You will find yourself surrounded by a vast, shimmering play of blue and violet colors, created by the sun filtering through the hole in the ceiling more than 100 feet overhead. The headwater is in Argostólion, and it enters the cave by traveling across the island and through holes in the coastline. Your tour will continue to the village of Sami, for a refreshment stop for ouzo (aniseed flavored liqueur) and Greek meze at a waterfront restaurant. Please note : Wear comfortable walking shoes. This tour is not wheelchair accessible.

Sorrento, Herculaneum *

Sorrento, Herculaneum *
The city of Herculaneum, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, was founded around the 4th century B.C., copying the geometric regularity of the layout of Naples. Its "decumani" (main streets) have an east-west orientation, while the "cardines" (narrower streets) run north-south. There is undeniably a "feeling" about Herculaneum, quite different from Pompeii, where you get the impression that its ancient population of 5,000 packed up and left only moments ago. Herculaneum was smaller than Pompeii but is better preserved simply because, while hot ashes consumed the wood of Pompeii's buildings, Herculaneum was covered by hot mud which sealed and protected entire city blocks. This means that marble floors, mosaics, paintings and carbonized woods can still be admired today. You will discover the ancient luxurious properties and villas including the House of the Mosaic , the House of Deer , the Thermae (baths) and the House of Carbonized Furniture . After a guided tour, you will be driven back to meet the yacht in Sorrento. Please note : This tour involves considerable walking on uneven pathways. Bring a sun hat, as shade is limited. Comfortable walking shoes are recommended.

In this enchanting city the past and present intersect in perfect harmony. Casually intermingled among ancient ruins and majestic cathedrals are the trappings of a modern metropolis: Skyscrapers, cafes, boutiques selling designer footwear. But of course what you seek first in the heart of Rome is its breathtaking history. A good place to begin is the Vatican, with its Sistine Chapel and St. Peter's Basilica. Works by Bernini, Michelangelo, Caravaggio, and Raphael are just a few of those on display, any one of which is worth hours of contemplation. Then the ancient ruins-Colosseum, Forum, Circus Maximus. And of course the Trevi Fountain for the obligatory coins promising your return to the Eternal City.

Weather conditions depending, you will see the volcano that never sleeps as you cruise by Stromboli and with any luck observe the active lava stream by day or the glowing lava at night.

Take time on shore to explore the beautiful village and enjoy the exclusive access that only a small ship can provide in a port large cruise ships cannot reach. An optional tour will introduce you to the highlights of the largest of the seven Aeolian Islands, well-known for its mythological connections and a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Dedicated to Vulcan, the Roman god of fire and metal working; Homer described the island as the workshop of Hephaestus, the Greek god of fire. Your tour will begin with a boat trip around the island with a breathtaking view of the Faraglioni ,Grotta del Cavallo, and Vulcanello . The only landing place is the Porto di Levante. Vulcano consists of three old craters. The first, in the south between Monte Aria and Monte Saraceno, has been extinct for centuries; the GranCratere , on the other hand, is still active, the last eruption occurring in 1890. Vulcanello, the third crater, is a promontory on the north eastern tip of the island created almost 2,000 years ago by an eruption. The climb up to the middle crater is particularly interesting and you can reach the top in less than an hour. Please note: The hike to the volcano is only recommended for fit people as a lot of uphill walking is involved. Wear walking shoes, bring a change of clothes and bottled water.

Giardini Naxos, Castelmola & Taormina *
Founded in the 6th century B.C. by Greeks from Naples, Taormina was subsequently taken over by the Romans. Many of its narrow cobblestone streets are closed to traffic, making the main part of Taormina accessible only by foot. Your guide will take you on a guided walk that includes the Piazza Vittorio Emanuele and the bustling main street of Corso Umberto , lined with former mansions of enchanting architecture and balconies that brim with flowers. Stop briefly in the inner courtyard of the medieval Corvaja Palace and enjoy the panoramic views of the bay and snow-capped Mount Etna in the distance as you gaze from the balcony of Piazza IX Aprile. Follow your guide up the narrow street that leads to the Greco-Roman Theatre . Taormina's most famous antique dates back to the 2nd and 3rd centuries B.C. and still hosts performances today. The theatre's dramatic location is nothing less than breathtaking. The tiny village of Castelmola is strategically located near Taormina, a splendid site with panoramic views. The focus of the village is the attractive Piazzetta del Duomo with its fine, intricate paving. From various points there are wonderful views of Mount Etna, the north coast and the beaches below. You will have time to indulge in browsing the many shops and boutiques that line the main street. Please note : This tour involves walking over cobbled and uneven surfaces and is not recommended for those with limited mobility or who tire easily. Buses are not permitted in Taormina and many parts are accessible only by foot. Wear comfortable walking shoes. Guests will get to the city center from the parking lot by lifts.Keep in mind Taormina can be very crowded.

Giardini Naxos, Scenic Mount Etna
Journey to the slopes of Mount Etna, Europe’s largest and most active volcano, rising 10,723 feet above the island of Sicily. Travel along a scenic coastal highway before ascending through a fertile landscape of lush vineyards, citrus groves, and traditional villages such as Santa Venerina and Zafferana Etnea. As you climb higher, the scenery transforms into stark volcanic terrain leading to the Sapienza Refuge. Here, you’ll explore the Crateri Silvestri, small craters surrounded by vast fields of grey lava shaped by past eruptions, including the powerful flow of 1983. Take in sweeping views, observe the dramatic volcanic formations, and enjoy free time before returning to the pier. Notes: Wear comfortable walking shoes. Due to the high altitude, bring a light jacket or sweater.

The Straits of Messina, a narrow passage between Sicily and mainland Italy, are famed for their dramatic scenery, strong currents, and mythological legends. Linking the Tyrrhenian and Ionian Seas, this strategic waterway has long been a crossroads of history and culture. As you sail through, you’ll be treated to views of rugged coastlines, picturesque villages, and possibly even the whirlpools that inspired the ancient tales of Scylla and Charybdis.

Sorrento, Boat Tour to Positano *

Square, white Moorish-style houses are set in luxurious gardens, and descend in steep steps down the mountainside to the bay. Offshore is Galli Island, the legendary home of Sirens. Positano is embroidered with narrow lanes and steps and dominated by the splendid dome covered in polychrome majolica at the Church of Santa Maria Assunta . Piazzettas and cafés are filled with people pausing during the 100-step climb that leads up the hillside. Enjoy time at leisure for shopping and for a satisfying drink at a café.
