Explore this region on this easy panoramic experience.  First you will travel through Bluff – Pearl of the South – home of the world famous Bluff Oyster, and the oldest continuously occupied European settlement in New Zealand!  Visit Stirling Point, with its famous signpost and walking tracks, the beginning of State Highway 1 which traverses the length of the country to Cape Reinga in the far north – the journey really does begin in Bluff!  There are panoramic views from the viewing platform on top of Bluff Hill (Motupohue), and a network of walking tracks, a nature lover’s delight, with abundant native birdlife and flora, much of which is rare except on island wildlife sanctuaries. Invercargill is the regional capital and commercial hub of Southland. Founded in the 1850’s, it is New Zealand’s southernmost city - and one of the southernmost cities in the world. Fondly dubbed the "City of Water and Light", referring to the long summer daylight hours, frequent appearances of the Aurora Australis (Southern Lights), and the city’s position beside the Waihopai River estuary, Invercargill has plenty of character and a friendly, laid-back atmosphere. You will visit the pride of Invercargill, Queens Park, a magnificent public park in the heart of the city. The park sprawls across 80 hectares of beautifully kept gardens, wildlife habitats, and sports areas. Highlights of this New Zealand Garden of National Significance include a stunning rose garden, a rhododendron dell, an azalea garden, a Japanese garden, bush paths through a selection of native plants, rock and herb gardens, and a stumpery. An indoor Winter Garden features tropical and flowering plants, and a range of cacti are displayed in an adjoining structure. The park also houses an impressive bird aviary, farmyard area, and animal enclosures.

Nineteen miles (30 kilometers) from Invercargill, the seaside town of Riverton (Aparima) is one of the most popular towns in Western Southland and is a great stop on the Southern Scenic Route. The township is nestled at the western end of Oreti Beach, set in a picturesque location that spans Jacob’s River Estuary. The fondly named “Riviera of the South” is a fantastic place for all visitors.  You will depart Bluff wharf and head straight for the first stop just outside of Riverton, The Flax Mill Museum, New Zealand’s only authentic flax mill plant still operating on its original site. Enjoy a 12-minute DVD which explains the process and history of the industry. Witness a live demonstration of flax stripping and scutching. There will also be time for questions and discussion. Depart the Museum and head to Riverton where you will have free time to explore the main street and explore the various galleries, historic sites, photo stops by the river, shops or enjoy a light lunch at one of the local cafes (at own expense). You will next experience Te Hikoi Southern Journey Museum and Information Centre, a Western Southland's ultimate heritage attraction.  The museum features authentic life-size displays, adventurous characters and engaging stories that reveal how early Maori and Europeans adapted to survive on nature's edge and live together. Enjoy the scenic trip back past some of Southlands rugged farmland and on to your waiting ship.
