Benoa to Singapore
Begin your voyage in Benoa and be instantly entranced by Bali’s spectacular beauty, calm waters, small village atmosphere and Batik artistry. Bali Volcano is the first of four, followed by Gunung Rinjani on Lombok, Java’s Mount Bromo and the famous Krakatoa. In the rarely visited port of Lembar, experience true island life and savor a satay cooked over coals and topped with peanut sauce. Celukan Bawang offers the volcanic black sand Lovina Beach and Puri Agung Beleleng Compound, the home of the first king of Beleleng Regency. Java’s Probolinggo is home to Mount Bromo and the ethnic minority Tengger people who have held onto their traditions for centuries. Nature lovers and outdoor enthusiasts will delight in the private island feel of remote Pulau Menyawakan, where white-sand beaches, rainforests, coastal mangroves and a biodiverse reef system welcome snorkelers and divers with 35 types of corals and sponges. In Semarang, sample the fantastic Chinese food and climb to enlightenment at the 8th century Borobudur, the world’s largest Buddhist temple. In the small port of Kepulauan Seribu, visit the secluded unspoiled beaches of Pantara Island featuring white-sand surrounded by emerald-green waters. Conclude your Indonesian adventure upon arriving in the world’s second busiest port of Singapore. After a day of exploring the Botanic Gardens, Chinatown, Little India, Kampong Glam and shopping on Orchard Road, toast a Singapore Sling to the trip of a lifetime at the Raffles Hotel.

Day 1: Benoa
Described as paradise, Bali’s spectacular beauty is difficult to describe in words.  The calm waters and beautiful white sand beaches of the small village of Benoa have made it the prime water sports area of Bali. Bali Volcano, also known as Mount Batur is a popular sightseeing destination with magnificent views from the Batur Caldera. Batik is still very popular in Bali and is considered one of the country’s most highly developed art forms.

Day 2: Lembar
Beautiful Lombok is a small, rarely visited port, offering a look at island life without large resorts. Dominating the island is Indonesia’s second largest volcano, Gunung  Rinjani, but this island is known for its lovely beaches and great surfing spots, deep turquoise-blue bays and massive headlands.  Other sites of interest include Suranadii Temple, Narmada Temple and Pringgasela village.
VIEW THE JOURNEY
Day 3: Celukan Bawang
This Bali port is not a typical Western resort town, and will offer local flavor and experiences. Visit Lovina Beach with its volcanic black sand, and Puri Agung Beleleng Compound, the home of the first king of Beleleng Regency. Shop for handicrafts and try the tasty local food dishes.
VIEW THE JOURNEY
Day 4: Probolinggo
This pretty port town is home to the ethnic minority Tengger people who have kept hold of their traditions and customs for many centuries.  The main tourist attraction here is Mount Bromo, one of Indonesia’s most spectacular volcanoes. Although the top has blown off the volcano, the 7,641-foot peak has a cone that is still active.
VIEW THE JOURNEY
Day 6: Pulau Menyawakan
Nature lovers and outdoor enthusiasts will thrill at this remote location where only small ships and ferries go unless you charter a flight.  This lovely area boasts white-sand beaches, rainforest, coastal mangroves and a biodiverse reef system that welcomes snorkelers or divers with 35 types of corals and sponges on what will feel like your own private island.
VIEW THE JOURNEY
Day 7: Semarang
This port is the gateway to take a day trip to Borobudur, the Buddhist temple and UNESCO World Heritage Site that dates back to the 8th century.  There’s also plenty to do in Semarang.  There is excellent Chinese food around town and important historical sites like Gedung Batu  – the city’s oldest Chinese temple complex, or  the Old Quarter featuring Dutch colonial architecture including Lawang Sewu, a massive building and Sam Poo Kong, a 15th century temple in Chinatown.
VIEW THE JOURNEY
Day 9: Krakatoa
Get up close to well-known Krakatoa. The Krakatoa Volcano eruption of 1883 was about 10 times more explosive than the 1980 eruption of Mount St. Helens. Prior to the eruption there were 3 linked volcanic peaks. With over 70% of the island destroyed, Krakatoa and the two nearby islands of Lang and Verlatan are the remnants of this eruption. The still-active volcano has periodic small eruptions.
VIEW THE JOURNEY
Day 10: Pantara Island
Pantara Island is a small remote port in The Thousand Islands chain. Its secluded location is perfect for beach time on the pure white-sand surrounded by emerald-green waters. Or take a Zodiac tour to cruise around this beautiful, unspoiled tropical paradise.
VIEW THE JOURNEY
Day 14: Pulau Bintan
A short boat ride from Singapore, Pulau Bintan has some of the best white-sand beaches in Sumatra. Its northern Lagoi area is an upscale resort destination but the real cultural experience can be found in Tnajung Pinang where its eclectic mix of building styles, including Dutch colonial, and the noisy, bustling streets offer exposure to memorable rustic charm.

Day 15: Singapore
Say hello to Stamford Raffles’ engaging city, a modern metropolis which is blended with the traditional historic towns of the founders. These include Chinatown, Little India and the Malay community of Kampong Glam. The Singapore River meanders through the center of the island with vistas of skyscrapers and historic shop houses, often side-by-side. Singapore is a tropical garden city with flowers and greenery everywhere. Among the attractions are the domes at Gardens by the Bay located near Marina Bay and the UNESCO World Heritage Site Botanic Gardens. Orchard Road is the epicenter for shopping some of Asia’s leading retailers and includes both international brands and local shops.

“So the opportunity to explore their homeland, now with Windstar’s own crew, makes this itinerary truly special.”
Our Storyteller: Steve Simao
Vice President of Sales
Steve Simao proudly proclaimed his intentions to work in the cruise industry at the tender age of 14 while disembarking his first voyage. For the past 25 years he’s done just that, serving as chief purser for Norwegian Cruise Line before rising to the top of the sales ranks at Seabourn and Holland America. He now oversees all sales for Windstar’s worldwide network, which continues to fuel his passion for travel on the high seas. His connection to Indonesia is fueled by another passion: He and his wife (who is of Indonesian descent) were married there, dressed in traditional garb, nearly a quarter-century ago. He regularly visits family in the region, and speaks fluent Bahasa Indonesia.

Sure, this Indonesian island hop features plenty of amazing sights and natural wonders — everything from Pantara Island’s unspoiled beaches to the UNESCO-designated temple complex of Borobudur. Yet what really sets the region apart is its people, says Steve Simao who, as a boy, often interacted with Indonesian crewmembers during family cruises. “Even then I realized there was something unique about their service – friendly, heartfelt, and quite genuine,” he recalls. “So the opportunity to explore their homeland, now with Windstar’s own crew, makes this itinerary truly special.”

You’ll encounter plenty of warm, welcoming smiles among the master carvers and batik makers on Bali, vendors hawking satay in Lembar, and members of the ethnic Tengger community on Java. The island also is home to Mount Bromo — one of four active volcanoes you’ll witness, along with Mount Batur on Bali, Lombok’s Gunung Rinjani, and the famous Krakatoa. Celukan Bawang’s black-sand Lovina Beach and the biodiverse reef system surrounding Pulau Menyawakan are perfect spots for complimentary snorkeling and kayaking off Wind Spirit’s watersports platform before arriving in Singapore. An overnight allows time to experience its Botanic Gardens — a UNESCO World Heritage Site — and thriving street food scene. Steve’s go-to: char kway teow, a popular stir-fried noodle dish “Slurping a bowl amidst the city’s buzz,” he says, “you’ll feel just like a local.”

IF I WERE THERE...
  • Test your bartering skills while shopping for ornate wood carvings and other Balinese crafts — “Make an opening bid around a quarter of the asking price, then settle for around half. Don’t feel awkward; it’s expected!”
  • Do more shopping in Singapore — Steve suggests heading to Haji Lane, “a quaint street filled with small cafés, unique boutiques, and traditional shophouses … it’s quite a contrast to upscale Orchard Road and the Singapore of Crazy Rich Asians”
  • Explore the UNESCO World Heritage Site of Borobudur, the world’s largest Buddhist temple complex — “Wear comfortable shoes so you can climb to the top of the main temple for incredible photos of the 72 stupas, then enjoy lunch while sitting in awe of this amazing site”
  • Get an up-close peek of Mount Bromo, an active volcano near Probolinggo — “You’ll ride a donkey to the volcano’s base, then climb stairs to the rim of the crater — a true once-in-a-lifetime experience”
  • Interact with members of the native Sasak tribe during a village visit on Lombok — “Fascinating insight into this colorful and musical culture”
